What do you cook at Easter?

What are your traditions?

(We have friends coming for Easter and I want to make an effort with the food)

When I was a child in the 70s we used to eat chocolate eggs until we were sick. We'd then have our normal Sunday lunch.

We don't have any Easter traditions apart from stuffing copious amounts of chocolate into our mouths.

When did Easter become an event requiring traditional food?

But since you ask, I understand that DH's family regard lamb as the traditional Easter lunch.

We always have chicken (love lamb but it is SO expensive) and for the veggies something with eggs - big spanish omlette last year. No pudding though - have the chocolate egg after lunch.

Although, we don't really make a fuss over having a special Easter dinner. I didn't know it was the done thing.. (unless you are religious)

There are traditional Easter foods.

Hot cross buns.
Simnel cake.
Gingerbread possibly.

Just wondered if there were any others.

Lakeland catalogue have a easy recipe for hot cross buns in it at the moment... actually every magainze I touch lately seems to carry a recipe for hot cross buns, but I dont' think that many people actually make them - so doing it would be quite impressive...

Never heard of gingerbread being easter-ish... though you could make them in the shape of bunnies I suppose?

lamb with all the trmmings. will make a special pud too. rasp pavlova or something.

made hot cross buns once (though we eat them on Good Friday) wasn't worth the faff.

I'm not wild on lamb, so won't be cooking it.

I have the 5 of us, plus aunt & 2 cousins coming. I'm just using it as an excuse to make delicious things out of the new Good Food magazine. So we're having roast chickens (x2), patatas bravas, patatas-non-bravas for those who don't like spicy stuff, and fattoush.

Then as a huge culinary collision, we'll be having one of my aunt's awesome Christmas puddings left over from Christmas, with whipped cream.

If I do a starter it will be prawn-oriented as I have a big bag of 'em.

Lots of chocolate eggs. Also baking some iced biscuits to hang on twiggy tree thing in the hall, but more as an exercise to occupy the DCs rather than for culinary reasons.

And why is lamb now the "easter meal"? The poor things have only just been born - they are not ready to eat until October in my experience!

We have whole lambs on the spit here in Greece but it is a much larger event than Easter in the UK.

ah it is an old tradition isn't it? But before the days of Scottish freezers maybe they had a different breeding schedule or it was what I call mutton (dressed as lamb of course)

Only tradition we ever had at Easter day was eggs (choc and the real thing). Always had hot cross buns for Good Friday breakfast, and fish for tea.

We always have turkey and bread and butter pudding for dessert. We always have loads of eggs from our hens so have poached eggs on toast on Easter Sunday morning.
