How do you cook oatmeal?

I accidentally bought 5 kilos of oatmeal instead of porridge oats. Have tried cooking it as porridge but ended up with something rather like a brick which family refused to eat. Is there anything other than chicken food I can do with it?

You used too much oatmeal to make the porridge.

Try again with much less.

Or make oatcakes.

muffins
as part of bircher muesli
bread roll topping

Brose

Oatcakes

Porridge (should be pinhead oatmeal for porridge) - soak overnight in water then add milk in morning and boil up for 5 mins, salt and serve, or pour into a wooden drawer to cool and slice later

Dip mackerel or herring fillets in flour, egg then oatmeal and shallow fry.

Skirl: Fry sliced onions in same pan as sausages/fish/whatever was cooked in (in lard if you dare) till starting to brown nicely then sprinkle oatmeal onto, stir for a few more mins,, season well with salt and pepper, serve as accompaniment to meat.

Parkin.

So, have you started cooking your oatmeal?

RacingSnake · 26/03/2010 21:19

Yes, actually; I have soaked some overnight as recommended and made some less brick-like porridge. Haven't had time to try breakfast bars, not sure what bircher muesli is and feel that my life does not (sadly) have room home-made oatcakes. I like the idea of mackerel in oatmeal (and skirl).

Skirlie mash (from the Three Chimneys Recipe book, dontcha know?)

Make skirlie as above, loads of butter. Mash into mash potatoes. If really pushing the boat out then make into potato cakes and bake in oven.

Also I have an old Lakeland recipe - Oatmeal and Raisin Cookies, they are scrummy too.

A relative of DH used own the mill that makes the "Oatmeal of Alford" I felt it was a family responsibility to learn to cook with the stuff!

in fact look here

meltedmarsbars · 26/03/2010 22:30

Ooh, I haven't done that skirlie/mash thing!

A relative of mine used to own BeRo, does that mean I always have to use their flour? Its soooo expensive and I'm a cheapskate.

tootootired · 26/03/2010 23:23

only if you get a discount. IME the only way to get freebies is to have a relative who drives lorries.

Fantastic recipes! At this rate I am going to have to buy more oatmeal!
