Is it like a grill with 6 trays? In which case you just need cheese (you can get raclette cheese in Waitrose, but can otherwise use edam or gouda, anything that melts nice and stringily) - cut into triangles to fit the trays.
Serve with gherkins, boiled new potatoes, salad.
That's about all there is to it.....

What sort of a raclette set is it? One with little pans that go underneath a hot ring with a metail plate on top or the real mckoy heating element with a thingie for holding the cheese in front of it?

If it is the former then the classic "recipe" is potatoes boiled in their skins, raclette cheese (but can use other good melting cheeses as alternatives), pickles, ham, cold cuts and each person mixes and matches as they please.

I am very fond of plum chutney and frozen peas topped with a mild raclette cheese. But then I'm weird.

Thanks its the 6 tray, hot ring job. So do you put the pickles etc in first and then melt the cheese over the top of them?

Ds loves smoked salmon with his, we also do sweetcorn, pastrami, mushrooms, black olives and baguette. We have it every week as our Friday night welcome to the weekend!

CountessDracula · 12/03/2010 10:59

no you just cook the cheese in the machine

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 12/03/2010 11:03

OOh that's what we had for dinner the other night. I really did overdo it think
We have it with boiled potatoes, cornichons, cocktail onions, baby corn, olives, ham and salami.
The kids like to put a selection in the tray with cheese on top then pour the melted concoction over the potatoes.

MrFibble · 12/03/2010 20:39

My understanding is that you melt the cheese in the trays and pour it over the other stuff but our raclette sessions are kind of "free expression" and can get a bit competitive.

The children love to make little omlettes in their pans but they are hell to clean afterwards and DS has burnt himself 3 times so far - twit!

Basically we just put a large selection of lots of different things on the table in little bowls and let everyone do as they please - within reason. DH even put cold haggis into a raclette pan last year....

Thanks everyone trying it out for Mother's Day
