How to move on from puree

My DS is 6 months and has been having puree for a couple of weeks. I have tried to give him mashed food instead of totally pureed but it just sits in the back of his throat til he can't breathe and then he sicks it back up. Any advice? Have tried to give him sticks of food so he can control how he eats but he is like a hoover and tries to swallow everything!

Would carry on with purees for now or jsut make them a touch coarser so yuo gradually build up to lumpier stuff.

My Ds is 8 months and still majority of his food is pureed. !

Well steamed things like courgette and carrot sticks go down nicely as well.

Thanks, am first time mum so worry about everything. Didn't want to start on solids before 6 months as per advice, but then the advice seems to be that by 7 months they should be on lumpy food or their speech and eating development will be behind. Aaarrghhhh!

I made up a stage One and a Half diet for dd2 - which is basically smooth purees with some cooked cous cous mixed in! (great for using up any smooth purees you've got lying around)

IMO there is too big a jump from stage 1 (smooth) to stage 2 which will often contain differently sized and textured lumps. From a neurological point of view, it is much easier for a baby's brain to cope with the feedback from the nerves in the mouth and the tastebuds for lumps of a uniform size and texture - resulting in a more co-ordinated swallow (and less chance of coughing and gagging).

Other things which are good for a stage one and a half diet include soggy rice krispies, and semolina (semolina pudding always a favourite! ) I personally tend to avoid rice as I can never cook it quite right - either too dry or too sticky!

As well as ready brek (smooth but slightly more texture) and weetabix (ditto).

It makes no difference to speech development if a baby not on solids by 7 months. It's like saying, if they're not crawling by 9 months they won't be walking on time. Not true. If they never get onto lumpy food then I might be worried, but not for a while yet!

You might get some more responses if you tried posting in the Weaning section.
