Could anyone tell me what kind of spread to use and some good ideas for fillings. I hate the idea of giving my daughter sugar or salt as the health visitors have always told me these are bad for babies. I bought some dairylee cheese spread the other day thinking it would be good for my daughter but found it had two types of salt and three E numbers in. I would be grateful for any advice.

I don't use butter or marg - if you have nice bread you don't really need it
Ham - has some salt
Cheese
Tuna - with or with out mayo (don't use low cal)-I chop tomato up in it
Banana
Jam - homemade or shop bought have sugar - but a bit won't do much harm

Thank you for these everyone. She's just started to eat sandwiches normally when she's fed up of eating she starts throwing them around until they're on the floor. Thought if I could put something in them she likes she might actually eat them.

my daughter is 10 months old and is very slow of the mark with feeding herself finger food, although she is always very interested in my marmite on toast is she okay to have a small amount?

I gave my daughter marmite from quite an early age. One really good tip is to mash a bit of marmite with butter so it's easy to spread evenly. That way you really can use just a tiny bit if you want to.

Futura Organic Cream Cheese (Waitrose, but probably others aswell)
is a better choice than Dairylee, has absolutely no E numbers and tastes much better too.

I know that babies shouldn't have salt and I also do my best to avoid it but shop bought bread has salt in it so it is impossible to serve sandwiches without having some salt unless you bake your own to a no salt recipe.

meep · 04/05/2008 20:25

mashed avocado and cream cheese - it tastes yummy!

Organic shop bought bread normally has less salt than normal stuff

shrooms · 04/05/2008 23:52

Mashed avacado and thick hummus (homemade) or a thinner spread of the shop bought stuff.

Almond butter and fruit puree

Sliced grilled marinaded tofu, or scrambled tofu

Tahini and marmite

Tahini and falafel

Blended cooked spinach/ broccolo and butter beans with some garlic and olive oil.

I meant broccoli. Wasn't trying to be exotic.

RE marmite- you can do a baked toast- brush it with watered down marmite and maybe top it with cheese then bake in the oven for a bit, it keeps for a week in an airtight container, so is quite a handy snack.
shrooms- love your sandwiches!
