Pesto in a cottage pie - bad idea?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/02/2010 13:22

I normally add a healthy glug of Hendersons Relish but have run out so I'm trying to come up with something to flavour it a little

Would pesto be hideous?

I'm not sure it's such a good idea

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/02/2010 13:25

No it isn't is it, thank god I consulted the oracle hehe

My brain is not working today

Any other ideas?

Noooo don't do it!

Um, I normally just add some thyme and a beef or lamb stock cube. You could try a little Lee and Perrins if you have it?

BunnyLebowski · 25/02/2010 13:28

No to pesto. HP sauce works really well though. I always add a good slug.

Do you have any?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/02/2010 13:30

LOl. No that is pretty much at the top of the list along with opal fruits and prawns as one of the things you should not add to a cottage pie.

HP sauce is a good idea, or a dollop of dijon.

BendyBob · 25/02/2010 13:32

No to pesto.

I put tomato puree in mine.

Or maybe try some worcestershire sauce?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/02/2010 13:32

Tip: For an italianate version of an old favourite, add half a jar of pesto to your cottage pie. To add to the Italian flavour, top with mascarpone cheese.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/02/2010 13:32

Ooh I do have hp sauce. Thanks!

lol getorf, she should send that in

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/02/2010 13:37

In my crap cook days, I once added a jar of black bean cook in sauce to a spag bol.

It tasted very odd.

SPBInDisguise · 25/02/2010 13:40

can i ask what kind of tinned chopped tomatoes you add to this sort of dish (or are tinned toms the work of the devil?) I can only ever find "italian style" ones and they taste odd in non italian dishes, chilli etc.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/02/2010 13:40

NOT saying you're a crap cook DWP , last post can be misconstrued!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/02/2010 13:42

hahahhaa maybe I will!

Good glug of red wine makes all the difference, I think.

Dash of oyster sauce if no wine.

Whole tinned tomatoes much nicer than chopped too.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/02/2010 13:44

I use crushed cherry toms as I agree tinned taste a bit funny. They make it a bit too watery too.

GrimmaTheNome · 25/02/2010 13:45

I reckon tomato puree is better than tinned toms in this sort of thing.

A glug of tomato ketchup is better than nothing if you don't mind a bit of sweetness.

I have been known to add a bit of mint sauce to a shepherds pie

SerenityNowakaBleh · 25/02/2010 13:46

Glug of wine in dish or into mouth? Into mouth definitely makes a difference.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/02/2010 13:50

Eh? You put tomatoes in a cottage pie?

SPB I cook curry about 4 times a week an in the curries to which I add tomatoes, you are right, italian ones taste odd (too sweet). I either get tins of toms from Indian grocers, or the cheapest tinned tomatoes from Asda (can't reember brand name) as they taste sourer and are better in curries.

Don't know about cottage pie as I think tis wrong to add tomatoes to shepherds pie

SPBInDisguise · 25/02/2010 13:54

no, you're right, i realised as i was typing, so added eg chilli as i still wanted to know
Think napolina do non italian ones but they're ridiculously expensive
Don't understand why they're almost all 'italian style'. Glad it's not just me - when I see some, I'll stock up.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/02/2010 15:56

I can report that my no pestoey pie tastes pretty good so far!

I used some lea and perrins, garlic and dried thyme

I so wish I had Hendersons though it's just wrong without it! I always stock up when I go up north as we can't get it here hehe
