um...how about you try it and see?

GreatOrmondSt · 24/02/2010 17:27

Because if I make it and don't like it, I feel like I've lost an opportunity to eat something yummy....but as you are the only person to offer me any advice OMDB I feel I may have to.....

I use Ouorn and find I need to add lots of herbs/spices. Adjust to suit your own taste. I tend to make up a big batch of basic quorn mince, onions, celery, veg stock, tinned toms and then freeze it. I use it for shepherds pie, chilli, spag bol. I don't have it very often as it makes me windy.

ok thanks brightwell, I think I need to give it a go. I've tried Turkey mince before but found it a bit sweet....

i use quorn all the time as i find mince too fatty & quorn is lower in fat. a lot of people don't like it at first as you have to get used to cooking it. i normally fry my onion first, then add quorn & add a bit of water so it soaks it up & then you can add your other stuff depending what your making. hope that helps.

emmabemmasmom · 25/02/2010 12:05

I use Quorn all the time but never plain! It always needs sauce such as in a chilli ect. I make spanish rice which is like chilli with rice and whatnot and my DH still doesn't know it is not mince lol

Thanks for the tips ladies, I'll definitely give it a try. This recipe is going to be my first attempt I think.

Have a great weekend

BEANFEAST! I love this stuff! it's about 90p a packet and has a bbe date of over 12 months, so it just sits in your cupboard until you need it! Really easy to use, and yummy too!

NB: If you have a mushroom/mould allergy you most likely can't eat quorn, I found out the hard way sigh

GreatOrmondSt · 26/02/2010 16:30

thanks Sekhmet - do they sell it in most supermarkets? I've never heard of it....

OP posts:
Sekhmet · 26/02/2010 16:37

Yeah, I got mine from morrisons for 90p, it's a bit of a random one to try to find though, so you have to keep your eyes open for it, they tend to bung it where ever there is a gap, it will normallly be with other vegi products, or with things like instant rice or noodles. It's a dried product in a packet.

ok thanks Sekhmet, I'll keep an eye out for it

Probably a bit late if you are already put off it, but I always drain the fat from mince before I add the rest of the ingredients for the dish.

Alternatively I once bought mince from our local shop (supplied by a butcher) and it was much nicer than the supermarket ones, less fatty and more flavour.

Another idea is make a chilli with just veg, beans, pulses of any kind instead of mince. Mixed beans are good (from a tin) and chickpeas are a great one. I like big chunks of sweet potato.

GreatOrmondSt · 02/03/2010 11:22

Thanks BertieBotts, I do normally drain the fat anyway but this particular batch was just wrong. I found a few quorn recipes on the Mydish site so am going to give those ago before I resort back to mine, but you're right I should go to the Butchers to get the quality. Thanks for the tips

I like quorn, but find I have to 'fat' it up a bit - top tip is to stir lumps of mozzarella cheese into bolognaise sauce made with quorn, as well as adding lots of garlic, wine and chopped sundried tomatoes.

Have you tried ostrich steak mince? This is almost fat free, and tastes like the best mince steak. My husband is a fitness fiend and won't touch red meat, but he loves this stuff. It is also high in zinc, which is one of those things that you really only find in red meat.

LetThereBeRock · 02/03/2010 16:48

Vile.

GreatOrmondSt · 03/03/2010 16:37

No I haven't and wouldn't even know where to get it from?
I did however, find these two recipes when browsing online for Ostrich recipes!
