Nearly 11 month old won't stop eating!

Glad I found this site where as a first time mum I can get all my worries down in one place.

Basically he just eats constantly. and I don't know whether to carry on like I am or cut back on his food intake (which I feel really mean about as he gets upset)

He still has 4 6oz bottles a day and 3 balanced (I hope) meals but he can have something to eat every hour in between these Apart from his 2 hour nap. I keep a bowl of cut up carrot/cucumber/pepper/tomoto in the fridge and cubes of cheese. Also we have crackers and breadsticks and the odd packet of biscuits. A typical day is

8am bottle
9am breakfast. Cereal with fruit and toast with scrambled/boiled egg
10am snack. crackers/breadsticks with cheese/humous
11am bottle
12 noon lunch. Tuna/cheese salad sandwich/pitta bread followed by a yoghurt.
12.30pm Nap
2.30pm bottle
3.30pm snack. A biscuit or those organix crisp things
4.30pm Snack. Something from the prepared veg bowl in the fridge.
5.30 Dinner. Whatever we are having. (lasagne/stew/fish pie/roast dinner) etc.
6.30 bottle
7pm bed.

Is this normal, too much? I hear people talking all the time about their children having 2 bottles, 3 meals and 1 snack a day and think "Bloody hell, Ds would think I was starving him if I only gave him that)

He is in proportion. He is a BIG boy but his weight is perfect with his height so I didn't think I had anything to worry about but I alway's get people telling me "God, He eats loads doesn't he?"

Please tell me I'm not overfeeding my Ds and lead him into a life of obesity like I'm led to believe.

is he eating cos they are out for him or does he request them? tbh they do eat often when they are little as it keeps energy levels up. could be he's going through a big long growth spurt (my 2.4 ds can get through a fair bit when he feels like it) and as long as he's not getting overweight and the food is pretty healthy which your list seems to be i wouldn't worry. can he walk yet? they use up a lot of energy at this age just getting about!

My DD is 11mo and she goes through periods of eating stacks and then the next week eating less. She is only on 2 BFs a day now- maybe your DS will drop a bottle soon? As Ninja said, is he asking for food? Maybe try doing something else when he normally has a snack or a bottle and seeing if he'll manage. Otherwise I wouldn't worry, they know what they need I think.

what sort of quantities are you giving for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

lifeas3plus1 · 23/02/2010 19:35

Hi and Thanks. He's not quite walking yet but he is cruising furniture at lightening speed and is very active.

He does "ask" for food. When he's hungry he'll pat his tummy. I've tried distracting him when he does this but then he just crawls to the fridge and sit's there screeching until he gets something to eat.

His meal sizes are fairly big. Bigger than mine anyway. His breakfast is usually 2 weetabix with banana/strawberry followed by one slice of toast and (1) scrambled/boiled egg.

For lunch he will easily eat a whole sandwich (bar crusts) made with 2 pieces of bread and all the filling. The yoghurt that follows is equilivant to a big pot.

Dinner is alway's slightly more than my portion.

It really is madness. His bottles have recently dropped from 8oz to 6oz but apart from that he doesn't seem to be anywhere near giving one up.

Perhaps he just has a big appetite. (Like his father)

wow, that's what my 2yo eats

I wouldn't worry though, you should see what my 18mo nephew eats, it's amazing watching him!

Babies this age are meant to be chubby, he'll slim down a bit once walking.
If you're worried you could cut out really fatty foods, but it's a bit early to be worrying about all that really

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 23/02/2010 20:57

would he go spare if you cut out the egg at breakfast? That's the only thing that seems too much IMHO -if he's having cereal and fruit, and then toast, that should be OK.

Otherwise it seems fine (again, in my very humble opinion!)

My DS has always been a crappy eater. Getting better now, thankfully, but seriously - I wouldn't worry this young.
