Bread & Butter type pudding with hot x buns?

BethAndHerBrood · 22/02/2010 10:02

I have 6 going hard, hot x buns. How do I turn them into a pudding? I've never made B&B pudd, so have no idea where to start.

Thanks

Slice them down the middle and generously butter both of the cut sides.

Butter a glass or china ovendish.

Lay the buns down slightly overlapping, like tumbled dominoes IYSWIM.

Beat together a pint of milk, preferably not skimmed, with six eggs, a generous splash of vanilla extract, and about half a cup of sugar. Use more sugar if you like - it's difficult to make this too sweet .

Pour over the bread and place a weight on it to keep it under the milk mixture. A plate or similar shaped dish is suitable.

Leave to soak for several hours. Take the weight off, sprinkle with sugar (brown if you've got it) and bake in medium oven (about 180C) for aobut 1h or until a skewer comes out clean.

Eat hot or cold, with custard or icecream or neat. Enjoy!

You can also sprinkle raisins or choc-chips between the bunsbefore pouring the milk mix on.

Nothing to add apart from YUM and I would sprinkle some cinnamon on top for added wintry warmth

You can use any raisin bread in B&B pudding and it's also lovely made with slice of brioche and making a chocolate custard to pour over.

[Diet? What diet?]

Jamie Oliver did that really nice one for Sainsbury's a couple of years ago with marmalade.
I've made marmalade this year and can't wait to do that with it.

Well, I've made it, it's sat with some tins on it, weighing it down. I don't like HXB's, but may have to try this. In the interests of research, you understand!

It doesn't need to be heavily weighted, just enought o keep the buns under the liquid, so that they soak up nicely.

You know what a blanced diet is, I'm sure: a cake in each hand.

DisplayUBB - I think we have a convert.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I make mine with Baileys and double cream for even more extra richness...... tis yummy!

PrettyCandles · 22/02/2010 22:05

Baileys, mmmm. In the milk mix? It doesn't curdle?

bellavita · 22/02/2010 22:11

Nah, it doesn't curdle one little bit. Tis a Gordon Ramsay recipe - I use brioche. Very very light and fluffy.

I did this last year. Cut the buns in half and spread with chocolate spread, lay in a dish and pour over a tin/carton of ready made custard (or made from powder or from scratch!) and bake in the oven til it's hot. Very yummy - in fact I seem to remember letting the next lot of buns go hard on purpose
