So if you were a fussy eater as a child, what are you like now and vice versa? Was thinking about this today...

as I was speaking to one of my sisters who was a DREADFUL fussy eater as a child. I always remember my mother making spag bol and my sister used to take the mince sauce apart so she had a pile for mince, a pile for the tomatoes in the sauce and a pile for any herbs/veg added in. It literally took her 30 mins to separate all her food before she would even attempt to eat any of it.

She was one of those children who probably lived on bread and ketchup because she was such a picky/fussy eater. Oh she ate fish fingers. That's all I remember her eating lol.

Anyway, we had lunch the other day and she is now the most non fussy eater ever. Eats shellfish, fish, anything put in front of her. Fruit, veg, everything.

Conversely, I ate everything put in front of me as a child (other than tuna!) and now don't eat shellfish, only like white fish and can't stand rich or poncey food (makes me feel sick), or food that's too spicy, too creamy - you name it, I like it plain!

so were you a fussy eater who now eats everything or the other way round?

Pretty much the same for me and my sister! Gives me hope for ds!

KentuckyFriedPenguin · 21/02/2010 19:21

hmmm tricky

I was fed a really shite diet as a child - crispy pancakes and supernoodles was a normal tea, pot noodle on a saturday etc. BUt i barely ate anything.

I still eat noodles a lot but i also have eating "issues" which weren't helped by the fact that whatever i didn't eat for one meal was served up for the next and the next until i ate it.

psychomum5 · 21/02/2010 19:38

kind of fussy as a child, but then, had terrible food offered so you would have been fussy too!!

now, am pretty much happy to eat anything, as long as it won;t kill me.

DH also terribly fussy....MIL says as a child all he lived on was roast meat, potatoes, carrots, runner beans, sausages, weetabix and stale bread. god only knows why the stale bread.

now......he eats most things, and most bizarrely, each time I got pregnant, he started liking each of my cravings too, and developed his own.

am living in hope for DD2 and DS1 and DS2.....all very fussy, and altho some are allergy related, most are not, and so I hope that they will come round when older.

DD1 and DD3 are my best....try anything.....they better continue!!!

I was a complete fuss-arse as a child, refused to eat stews, casseroles, roasts all lovingly prepared by my DM. I wouldn't eat peas, meat, cooked carrots, cabbage, mashed potato any stodgy dessert. Although I do think this was all a hang-up of some really awful school dinners at infant school which is when it started.

from the age of about 11 I cooked mostly for myself and became very adventurous but still shied away from the above foods, sticking to veggies and indian/chinese style cooking. Now I will eat ANYTHING,I am not fussy in the slightest and the only thing I can think of that I don't like is white chocolate and glace cherries!.

My DM was most surprised (and probably a bit miffed) when I served up cottage pie last week when she came to stay, I told her I had been eating it for years.

foxinsocks · 21/02/2010 19:46

yes I always think this when I see people posting about their fussy-eating dcs and think they will probably be like my sis and eating garlic prawns and anything under the sun by the time just after they leave home !

lol at your dh and his pregnancy cravings psychomum.

I bet your mum was secretly quite annoyed Pat !

I was a very fussy eater. When I was 7, I brought to school for my packed lunch, wholemeal bread, with ham, lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoe, sliced cucumber, dollop of coleslaw. Apple juice.

My friends now still talk about how I would have none of the ordinary stuff, and my mum had to go totally overboard and bring on the works to get me to eat. I was so thin, we had pudding every day, usually berries with custard, and she made hot chocolate for me every morning, made from baking chocolate, not powder. With an added dollop of butter, and vanilla sugar for an extra sweet flavour. (I really was a stick insect)

I was blessed with a child of very similar disposition. My friends still talk about how I ordered my son scrambled eggs and baked beans and a salad, rather than giving him a bun. She was shocked to see him tuck in.

Now? I am a real foodie. I love food, and I live to eat.

It shows. I am no longer a stick insect, so my mum succeeded in giving me a sweet tooth of another dimension!

I was not fussy as a child and am not terribly fussy as an adult in that I like a lot of different foods, as long as it is decent quality and well-prepared. My sister was a fussier eater than me and still is. My brother was not a fussy eater as a child - he would eat anything, and is now much fussier than either my sister or me.

SchrodingersSexKitten · 21/02/2010 20:01

I was a 'normal' 1970s child: I loved tinned spagetti on toast, tinned ravioli on toast, chips, fish fingers, sandwiches etc
I hated all veg except frozen peas.
I wasn't considered that picky (this was before obesity fears, 5 a day, parental bans on sweets etc) but I did not ear a varied diet.

Today, I still love all of the above. Don't really like lettuce or broccoli, hate cauliflower and sprouts, tolerate carrots and greenbeans, strictly because I know 'they are good for me.'
I hate lamb, duck, shellfish, oysters (but that's normal, right?), haddock, most fish except tuna and sole.
I hate lots of herbs and flavourings: lemongrass (yuck!!), Ginger (retch), tarragon, dill (arggh), coconut, almonds, peanuts, satay, parsley, wasabi....
I hate sauces: cheese sauce, poivre, bearnaise, mustard, ceasar salad dressing, mint sauce, horseradish.
I hate food and desserts cooked with alcohol.
I hate brown bread.
I hate most cheese except basics like Brie, Edam and Lancashire. Cannot eat smelly cheese, blue cheese, Parmesan, goat's cheese-- all yuck.
I hate cherries and apricots, cannot abide peaches or watermelon. Dislike pineapple.
In restaurants, I don't actually choose what I eat....usually after dismissing all the stuff I don't like, there's only one thing left.

So, I was a limited eater as a child and I remain one as an adult.
I eat

cookielove · 21/02/2010 20:03

My sister was a fussy eater till about age five, but to be honest she did have whooping cough, and my mum says that was prob why, all she had was milk, and hotdogs straight from the fridge, i don't remember her being fussy at all in childhood, she was 3 when i was born.

And now she is not at all fussy, i would not eat fruit as a child, and will not eat it now, i don't like spice, or cream, but will eat both, so not that fussy, at a push i will eat granny smiths, but it has to be real hard shove.

lilymolly · 21/02/2010 20:04

I was a really fussy eater, living on ham and chips as a child

I now eat a hugely varied diet, but this has really only been in the last 10 years (I am 33)

So your theory stands firm with me x

Ivykaty44 · 21/02/2010 20:06

I was not a fussy eater as a child and eat everything bar chocolate pudding [hhm] now i eat everything bar tripe, I have tryed it but realyl not that keen so left it on the side.

Both my dd's are good at eating, not fussy, both eat fish, mussels, crab, lobster, they don't eat cooked mushrooms.

Ivykaty44 · 21/02/2010 20:08

Oh and I didn't like chips till I got to about 18, so i would just have the chicken or fish at the chippy

mazzystartled · 21/02/2010 20:10

I was ridiculously fussy

Apparently for years I would only eat eggy bread, raw carrots, plain boiled rice and apples.

I think it got better by the time I was 7 or 8, my mum was v understanding.

Now however, I will eat most things - and will try anything - though still definitely have vegetarian tendencies, more from squeamishness than morals or taste.

I kind of subscribe to the supertasters theory - picky children taste everything very vividly, and don't like it....but grow up to be foodies.

My mum gave up trying to get me to eat properly, I would only eat when I was really hungry and lived on chocolate finger biscuits and jaffa cakes! I now eat most things - not a great fan of veg but will eat it.

Cranreuch · 21/02/2010 20:37

I was fussy as a child, so were my brothers. Two of us are not fussy now, one is still fussy IMO - he won't eat much veg and eats a lot of rubbish. I used to vomit if I had to eat raw tomato - remember gagging at meal times, trying to eat somefoods.

I will try new food now, I like good food that is well made. I like making curries, Madhur Jaffrey book is well used. I do think I had a more varied diet and sometimes a lot less healthy, though my parents kept goats, hens, geese and ducks - so we had lots of eggs and some fresh goats milk.

My dc are fussy - I am just hoping they will become more adventurous with time.
