tescos have it, usually by the sour cream in the cooler part

Normal supermarkets have it, is in the chiller with the cream.

But you can use a half milk/half natural yoghurt mix, which does just the same job.

Baked the Hummingbird choc cookies today with DD. Yum!

Sainsburys

Making a recipe that calls for buttermilk? Use this simple substitute, and you won't need to buy any:

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

Milk (just under one cup)

1 Tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice
Preparation:

  1. Place a Tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup.
  1. Add enough milk to bring the liquid up to the one-cup line.
  1. Let stand for five minute. Then, use as much as your recipe calls for.

Google for conversion from cup to UK weights and measures.

Waitrose defo sell it. It's usually with the cream, creme fraiche, sour cream. I think Sainsbo's do too.

What are you making?

SayHitIsntSo · 18/02/2010 19:07

Sainsbury's, Tesco...everywhere, basically!

(except for cupcakes. I refuse to make cupcakes. Iwill make buns with icing on. Like the good Northern lass that I am.

just put a dash of vinegar in some milk, works a treat, buttermilk is a funny foreign creation.

ChocolateCakeWillMakeMeRich · 18/02/2010 20:51

Needs- I was looking for the recipe on how to make buttermilk on sat, so big thanks. I needed it for Hummingbird recipes (also) and for Canadian pancakes for our Olympic Breakfast

Could I find a tub of the fecking stuff anywhere? Tescos and Sainsburys don't stock it in my area. I think Waitrose would be the most likely stockist but not that easy for me to get to.

Agree with either the lemon juice/vinegar - whatever you have in the cupboard. Buttermilk not a necessity!

MmeBlueberry · 18/02/2010 20:56

You can buy it in Sainsbury's (and I'm sure everywhere else). It is with the cream.

If you can't find any, you can just let some milk go off, or add a little lemon juice to milk to make your own.

MmeBlueberry · 18/02/2010 20:58

I had an urge to make soda bread recently, and just used the milk/vinegar or lemon juice trick.

I think if I were making a novelty cake, I would try to get the real thing.

I was searching on internet for several days and found quite a few cool websites but at the end of the day I still think the best choice is either on this website: tinyurl.com/coadkz6 and if not, definitely on that one: tinyurl.com/chp7zf9

Bramshott · 06/03/2013 22:17

I've got it in the butcher's in the past.

maxmissie · 06/03/2013 22:22

I've used natural yogurt with lemon juice before as a substitute for buttermilk in a scone recipe. I did 150ml yogurt with 1tbsp lemon juice. The scones came out fine.
