I have six months to learn to bake...

I'm getting married at the end of August, and really like the idea of doing some of the food myself (we're expecting about 150 but going to get a buffet for 100 and add our personal touches - local food from where I grew up etc) and think that some little fairy cakes/cupcakes could be a good idea, but need to go up a level from my "keeping DD amused" baking to "charmingly home-made". Not fussed about perfection, but would quite like something a bit nice and unique. Any tips from you baking goddesses?

Also, is it feasible to do that many cakes a few days early? I have a massive oven so that isn't an issue.

You can freeze cakes so you can make them weeks in advance (I'd do that. Last thing you want is to be panicing about that when you've got other things to do) and do a cake per person with about 10 spare in case of "accidents"

The icing will be the bit that makes them look really special. I'd find something that looks good and copy it.

Practice with a pipeing bag or whatever. Things like edible glitter dusted over make a big difference but are really easy.

OK, this idea can be filed under Genius or Beyond Tacky, depending upon how you see it.

Also, it might not work if you have a 'colour scheme' for your wedding.

But if you want your wedding buffet to be very personal and include various special foods from your home locality (which is a great idea, btw), you could always top your cupcakes with a red sugar rose... to tie in with the bride being a Lancashire rose, etc. etc.

Misshardbroom - ooh, I can't decide if that is genius or tacky!

No colour scheme, just a general "theatrical" mood and a bit of an obsession with tea parties on my part.

I'll be wearing white, with my hair long and a garland of wild flowers (not actually wild, obv) in my hair. My bridesmaids and DP will be in costumes from the theatre wardrobe (I think DP is going for a byron style) I think my Dad is dressing as a ringmaster.

:D CAN'T WAIT!!!

Have fun baking!!
I would recommend practicing, try out various recipes to find the best cakes and if freezing check whether they taste nice to you once defrosted. Then, maybe for a bakesale, you could do a trial run of making the 100-150 to check out the time factors.
I hope you have an amazing day and the sun shines!
