Need ideas for 'tea-time' snacks for DSs aged 7 & 10

I am soooooo bored by our repertoire of tea-time meals for the DSs, aged 7 & 10.

They both have cooked school lunches, so tend not to want another 'cooked tea' and DH & I therefore mostly eat later during the week on schooldays.

Our current sort of items are:

  • sandwiches,
  • toasties,
  • chicken fingers, chips & veg
  • pizza
  • wraps
  • sometimes pasta
  • eggy bread

There's usually fruit, crisps, yoghurt etc in combination with these.
They're not dead keen on soup (except tomato), baked beans, or mixed salad of any description (although they will eat chopped cucumber and tomatoes)

We got into a bad habit when they were younger of letting them eat their tea in the playroom, and as a result I avoided lots of 'sloppy -type' foods which risked being spilt on the carpet.

Now we've got a kitchen/ breakfast table, and I'm going to ban food in the family room, so I feel we can be more flexible!

Give me all your own personal favourites....

mine have a cooked lunch at school too but sometimes they can still be quite hungry lol

hotdogs
fajitas
jacket spuds
chicken drummers or wings
ribs
savoury pancakes
fish goujons
meatballs and spaghetti
enchilladas
any leftovers(rarely!) from sunday dinner
risotto

When you do something like hotdogs, how do get fruit or veg into them?

Sorry- that sounded rather rude! It was a genuine question, rather than an accusation LOL!

no probs i'm thick skinned lol
they tend to eat a fair bit of fruit during the school day so i don't tend to get too hung up over it tbh
and if i haven't given them veg at home then obv they've had their share of that too at lunchtime, however mine will eat salad
another thought perhaps are pitta breads which they might like filled with falafel or other bits of meat/fish which you can then pack out with the cucumber and tomatoes your boys like
or perhaps some hummous/dips with these instead?
don't know about you but it's a right royal pain when they come home starving having had a naff lunch!

When I do stuff like that, I give them either raw veggies on the side - carrots, pepper, tomatoes etc or do some cooked carrots and broccoli on the side.

Your repertoire I think sounds fine. You may be bored of cooking it, but are they bored of eating it? Maybe not. As long as its balanced, I wouldn't worry overly about getting creative.

Quiche, coleslaw, potato salad, ham, pitta bread, hummous, dips, raw carrot, cucumber, peppers

We have adjusted our meal times and now eat earlier with the kids at around 6pm. Mine are the same ages as yours.

We like sitting with them around a table and I only have to wash up once!
