What shall I take to an office 'bring a dish' thing?

I'm two days into a new job and I've been told that there is a quarterly staff meeting where everyone brings food. It's next Tuesday and I've been told to bring something too.

I don't know how many people will be there - maybe 20?
No idea if there are kitchen facilities as it's at an office I've not been to yet.

So, criteria:

savoury
cold
one dish
made the night before
makes everybody think, "wow the new girl is really talented/thoughtful/cosmopolitan"

Any thoughts?

is it for lunch?
is there a microwave?
a lasagne?

Nothing messy which will spill is the rule.

No garlic

No nuts

Sausage rolls are popular.

However what I would do is get some justroll frozen puff pastry, roll it out spread some green pesto on in stripes, add little blobs of goats cheese, roll up, squish a bit, cut into rolls, cook for ten minute, eh voila goats cheese pesto pastries. You look all domestic goddessy and they taste yummy!

tortilla wraps spread with cream cheese and smoked salmon or ham , rolled then cut into slices / bite size pieces.
yum

LowLevelWhingeing · 09/02/2010 20:42

wow, that was quick!

Yes, it's for lunch.
No idea about microwave. Even if I was told there was an oven, I wouldn't necessarily assume it was OK because the office I work in is a complete shit tip, so if that's anything to go by...

Bite size things is a good idea, I was thinking a dish of something, but maybe that would be better.

cous cous is always easy but can be a bit messy to eat at that type of office lunch.

Lilyloo · 09/02/2010 20:44

No cooking at all then is your best option or something you can cook in the morning.
Def bites as people can eat and run , have meeting etc

LowLevelWhingeing · 09/02/2010 20:46

Yes, I'm liking the bites...

This is scrumptious, you can make it the night before & just sprinkle some more chopped spring onions & parmesan on the day to make it look fresh.

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/02/2010 10:54

That looks nice. Do you think it makes a difference whether it's fresh or jar pesto?

OP posts:
Floopy21 · 10/02/2010 13:00

jar pesto works well; I usually use Sacla, supermarket own brands can be a bit insipid IMO.

GreatOrmondSt · 10/02/2010 14:10

what about mini onion bhajis, they can be eaten hot or cold so you can make a call on it when you survey the kitchen facilities www.mydish.co.uk/recipe/484/Onion%20Bhaji

or mini bruschettas? there are around 6 different variations here /www.mydish.co.uk/adv-search

Chillohippi · 10/02/2010 14:14

A friend of mine once made this cake and too it into her new work. It certainly was a talking point, and apparently was rather nice too!

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/02/2010 15:13

Chillo, well, it's a shame I'm taking a savoury dish, otherwise I would obviously take in a kitty litter cake . I think that would make just the right kind of first impression...

OP posts:
Chillohippi · 10/02/2010 15:27

Yes I think so too. You did want everyone to think you were mad, didn't you?

squirrel42 · 10/02/2010 19:27

Mini quiches always popular in my office when we have leaving lunches, etc. And crispy dippy stuff too - some hummus, salsa, crudites and breadsticks. Would that count as a "dish"?

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/02/2010 20:07

Yes squirrel, I think it would count. Maybe a baguette and some hummous/pate so minimal chopping...pre-cut crudities can go a bit curly can't they?

How about an eyecatching salad - Greek salad tends to go down well? Although red onion breath might not be great afterwards

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/02/2010 20:12

Yes I thought Greek salad, one of my faves too. Personally, I'm very inconsiderate of my colleagues and love munching on raw onions!

roll of ready made, ready rolled puff pastry, score out into one ince squares, add blob of pesto on each square, add slice of tomato, grate some nice cheese on top, pop in oven for 10-20 mins, until golden, bubbly and yummy and then cut into squares. try not to eat them before you get to work!!! lovely warm, but still fantasic cold.

LowLevelWhingeing · 10/02/2010 20:45

ooh, they sound lovely pootle, thanks!
