What after school snacks can I give to DS?

We've got into a bit of a habit of popping into the sweet shop on the walk home ...

Needs to be handheld snack, because we have roads to cross on the way so he needs to hold my hand while cramming something into his mouth from the other hand!

He is literally trembling with hunger by the time he comes out at 3.30pm. I know that he eats well at school, eats a massive breakfast and dinner at home as well, and is super-skinny.

Veggie sticks aren't going to make him less shakey - it does need to be reasonably calorific - But chocolate every single day ain't right. And unfortunately he can't abide cereal bars or flapjacks. So far I've got as far as ... a banana. Any more ideas?

Few digestive biscuits
Sandwich
Fruit bars
Raisins
Yogurt/ smoothie drink.

Currant bun / croissant / something bready
Finger sandwiches - cream cheese very popular
A cereal bar & a banana

Definitely a big drink. kids generally don't drink enough during the day at school.

Thermos with soup. Put soup into an insulated cup and give him a straw to drink as he walks.

peanut butter on crackers - make 'sandwiches' of crackers with peanut butter in between so not messy/gooey.

have you tried those yogurty go-ahead bars..crispy yogurty outside and fruits in the middle..my DD1 loves them..small cake (suggested by DD2)..fruit...cheesy wrap?

Some great suggestions here already - thank you!

Am hoping that if I ply him with snack and drink and walk home via the park so we don't pass the sweet shop, and have a play on the swings instead we can avoid a daily battle of 'but I waaaaant chocolate'. Or at least, even if we do have the tantrum, I'm less likely to give in if I know that he has just had a snack! He is such a hungry boy... Better than the opposite problem, so I know I'm lucky!

Ds likes a banana and honey sandwich.

I don't mind if dc have a bit of cake/flapjack tbh. (Homemade especially can't be such a bad thing) Or cheese and crackers.

Not very hand held bit another big favourite with mine is a milkshake especially good with banana (again) in it, or other fruits and a bit of ice cream.

wraps with spreadable things like hummus, peanut butter and honey, spreading cheese, philly with rocket or this:

peanut butter, mashed banana, lemon juice, dessicated coconut and raisins, all mixed together onto a spread. ~(v.popular with my younger kids)

If you make them up early, wrap them tightky and chill for a couple of hours, they stay wrapped, iyswim.

homemade pancakes, spread with nutella type thing. Have you tried a savoury flapjack made with yoghurt and cheese? slice of yoghurt loaf or fruitcake, cinnamon roll, breadsticks dipped in philly then wrapped with ham.

Remember to take him a drink of something as well.
