a young gentleman i know... has insisted our scottish pie's are completely different to ones made in kiwi.

is he talking a load of pie

or is there a difference in the making that makes them come out a little different?

who has any good old fashioned passed down from family members type of pie?

i want to try them out and see how they compare to my own recipes from my family members.

preferably savoury. but i dont mind the odd sweet one.

DH reckons the NZ pies are second to none!

But he hid eat many of them after a night on the tiles, apparently!

i've been investigating... these bacon and egg ones look like they would be fab.

but there's some real variations of the filling.

and some use shortcrust.. some use puff?

what is NZ preference i will need to find out?

I have a Kiwi friend who used to make egg and bacon pie. It's more like a quiche and almost identical to the kind my mums friend (never left Northumberland) makes.

As a large proportion of Kiwi's originated from Scotland, is he not talking a load of tosh?

A pie is a pie?

DONTtouchMUMSspecialJUICE · 03/02/2010 10:48

well he admits he's only ever tried the ones shop bought in uk.

i am currently arguing a homemade all butter shortcrust scottish pie will be just as good... possibly even better.

My experience of the NZ pie sold in cafes out there is that they are generously filled with good quality steak and that the pastry is fresh and crisp-looking. They're certainly a lot nicer than the average 'chip shop' type steak & kidney or meat & potato pie in a tin-foil case we get in the UK which tend to be a bit tasteless, rather skimpy on the meat, overdone on the gravy and with too much heavy, greasy pastry. And those little raised 'scotch pies' .... well. Quite pale, overseasoned and nasty, I've always thought.

I think if you make your own pie with good quality ingredients it would match up to the NZ pie, no problem

I thought this was going to be a thread about Kiwi fruit pie and was very intrigued as it sounds disgusting.
I'll go now!

yeah... see my pies are made with good quality steak, and pastry is always made from scratch if its shortcrust.

agree with what you say about shop bought and chip shop variety. i actually cant eat those. the pastry is so greasy i feel like throwing up half way through.

but.... sit me down to a pastry made from from scratch and i could eat the whole pie myself. giant fork ready to stab anyone who wanted a piece.

fruitshoots - me too. thought I'd post my ideas for a pavlova with kiwi

I always think meat pies are nicer with ruff puff pastry?

Anyone up to try and make a pie out of Kiwis?
