Thunderbirds 2 cake - any domestic goddesses with tips?

Hello.
My 3 year old son is obsessed with the Thunderbirds courtesy of my 8 year old nephew off loading all his old videos of them and his toys (they are great by the way).
He wants to help me make a Thunderbirds 2 cake for his birthday....
I googled Bradfords in Glasgow who make ones which admitedly looks amazing but at £90 are, I am afraid, off limits - and also my son does want to help make it.
Do any of you have tips about making the body of the Thunderbird2?
If I covered a sponge with green fondant icing I am sure I could do a bodge job..but it would be great to have tips for the body bit and also whether you would all just use icing for the wings and fiddly bits or if you would have cake under those bits too.
Many thanks.

GoddessInTheKitchen is here to help

i see everyone has already helped you, and they all sound like wonderful ideas, i did a peppa pig one last year for dd and just baked a massive sponge and carved it out to the right shape and covered with rolled out icing and painted all the features on... if you are looking for an easy option then this is definitely it

I did TB4 for ds for his 7th bday. I'd promised him a "surprise" cake but hadn't decided what to do before the morning of the party. It was madeira cake hacked to pieces then reformed with jam and covered in coloured fondant icing. Looked dreadful close up but quite effective from a distance. ds loved it, nothing else mattered

wow that looks great stringer

Everyone's suggestions are great and inspiring.
Mmmcoffee - your Tardis is amazing - what a fantastic cake. I should really try and make one to thank my nephew for being so good about passing on his beloved TB stuff. (He has moved on to Dr Who...)
Alypaly - your TB2 is also amazing - wonderful! I suspect that confidence in sculpting is the answer and lots of jam and both butter and fondant icing. Sugar highs all round.
GoddessIntheKitchen - not too late - all advice gratefully received. Peppa Pig sounds tempting (she is also very popular here, especially her oink) but, sadly, suspect I will never be called on for pink fondant icing. Unless I do Lady Penelope's car. Now that's a thought....
Northender - TB4 would probably go down very well as both boys enjoy taking the machine out of the pod...
Stringerbell - many thanks for the link - we are in Scotland so too far from your friend (and I feel honour bound to make it too and include DS1 in process) but your friend's cake for Sam is fantastic. What bliss for a 4 year old.
Also - my DS2 will be 2 on 14 April so he and Sam obviously have same birthday! Good date! (DS1 who is to get TB2 is 4 in June).

Now I see how Jane Asher got hooked......her website has lots of cookward and ideas but I haven't read her books - I might have a browse in the library now too (if the boys' rampaging permits...)

All this help is fantastic!

Sorry to add thanks late but thanks too to FoxForceFive for Tracey island tips - am seriously thinking about it - the boys would love it!! And no need to buy any moulds.
Watch this space for what I actually end up doing in June but meantime all this help has been FAB (sorry - couldn't resist!).

Many thanks ladies!
