Help with Tripe

LizzyA123 · 28/01/2010 22:40

Hi my kids have been asking about tripe. My Father eats it with onions but I have tried it and just can't "stomach " it, pardon the pun.

My kids tell me that they won't like it but haven't tried it.

I don't want to influence their likes and dislikes foodwise so try to encourage them to try things and decide for themselves.

Does anyone have a simple surefire recipe that will turn this most unappealing offal into gourmet food for kids??

(bleugh)

(fluffy's hiding this thread)

MmeLindt · 28/01/2010 22:46

Why do you want them to eat it?

coldtits · 28/01/2010 22:46

this is MUMSNET, not GREATGRANNIESNET! Nobody eats tripe. Nobody I have every met eats tripe, and I live in a midlands cattle market town. It's not considered fit for human consumption.

BUT as you asked nicely this looks almost like I wouldn't take the bag out of the bin straight after throwing it away.

FromGirders · 28/01/2010 22:46

I will eat anything. Have a stomach of iron.

But tripe???
Bin it.

Horrible slimy stuff.

Habbibu · 28/01/2010 22:50

I ate tripe by accident once On honeymoon. Blergh. I'm all for trying things, but there is a line.

LizzyA123 · 28/01/2010 23:16

MmeLindt

My kids asked what it tasted like and wanted to know if I would buy some to try.

Does anyone know any kids who actually eat the stuff?

Habbibu,

I am intrigued - how do you accidentally eat tripe on a honeymoon????

Carefully looked up Spanish for tripe in phrasebook to avoid it. Went into bar to get tapas. Asked what there was in dodgy Spanish. Heard one word I recognised, panicked and nodded to that. Remembered after the first bit why I recognised the word.

MmeLindt · 28/01/2010 23:24

Oh, Habs. That sounds like the kind of thing that I would do. Did you eat it?

Habbibu · 28/01/2010 23:24

Only that first bite. It was grim.

Habbibu · 28/01/2010 23:25

I wish it was an unusual event for me, but in fact it's bloody typical. Not the tripe - the idiocy.

MmeLindt · 28/01/2010 23:31

I am the same. I ordered running shoes in the wrong size. Did not even occur to me until I was in my bed that night that I could not remember clicking a size button. Size 4 so not even any chance of selling them on.

Sorry for hijack, OP. Will endeavour to think of delicious things to do with tripe.

meltedmarsbars · 29/01/2010 15:13

The Czechs eat a delicious tripe soup.

But then, they do eat some wierd stuff!

whoopstheregoesmymerkin · 29/01/2010 15:19

My Gran used to poach it in milk and onions and try to make me eat it.
Mind you, she used to boil a HORSE'S WILLY and eat that as a treat.

Mmmm mmmmm.

Some things just don't need to be eaten. Tripe is one of them.

Habbibu · 29/01/2010 15:20
TheBossofMe · 29/01/2010 15:25

Don't do it.

Tripe is for the dogs. And even they weren't wild about it!

BadGardener · 29/01/2010 16:06

There is a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe in the River Cottage Cookbook which does it with chickpeas and chorizo, presumably so you can leave the tripe at the side of your plate and still have a decent meal from the chickpeas and chorizo.

Habbibu · 29/01/2010 16:08

The tripe I had on honeymoon was with chickpeas and spinach. It hid in the sauce - don't fall for it!

BadGardener · 29/01/2010 16:18

LOL @ 'this is MUMSNET, not GREATGRANNIESNET!'

slng · 29/01/2010 18:11

It's nice! Cook in soup with beef and carrots and potatoes and plenty of black pepper. DS1 ate it once when he was little...

NumptyMum · 29/01/2010 18:20

oh god, just the idea of horses willy for tea - bleurgh. I'm all for trying to use the whole of an animal, but there are certain extremes (or even extremities) that are beyond countenance...

LizzyA123 better make sure your kids don't read this thread in case they get any other ideas about unusual meals!!
