Lunch/dinner/tea/.supper conundrum and 5-year-old

If you have a 5-year-old who usually has school dinners (ie hot meal in the middle of the day) what do you do about meals in the evening? Do you give scrambled eggs on toast/sandwiches/muffins etc or go ahead with spag bol/cottage pie/casserole?
I was doing the 'tea/supper' type meal for DS but he was always hungry after it so now I'm tending towards cooking 'dinner' in the evenings again. DS eats a lot but is skinny as a very active child, so I suppose I should just feed him till he's had enough, shouldn't I?

I give mine a proper cooked dinner still - they don't really get that much at school and they have to shovel it down double quick and after a long day are still hungry if you just give them a sandwich or something on toast when they get in.

I also don't think their build etc has anything to do with it - if you had a meal at 12ish you would then need to eat again later in the day and a sandwich would mean that you would be awfully hungry when you woke up the next day.

I mix and match, having a small portion of a proper meal is better than a slice of toast imo, and is also a way of getting some fresh veg into them. On the other hand sometimes he is so tired after school that he can barely lift his nose off the ground so he just has toast and fruit

Yes, my reception ds has school dinners but almost always has 'proper' food for supper, often after a 'snack' of toast or fruit when he gets home. I think he has hollow legs.

i do proper dinner too. i dont think school dinners are that big, and in my dds case i would imagine most of it ends up in the bin.

I'd do 'proper dinner' but just adjust portion size as necessary.

DTs are in reception and have a hot lunch. I then give them beans/eggs/cheese on toast type meals or sandwiches and fruit etc for tea.
