I struggle with portion size so am unsure if I am giving her too much food _ can you have a look at an average day and tell me where I am going wrong ?
Thanks

Packed lunch - One slice of grain bread( buttered) with a slice of edam and a slice of ham.

it doesn't sound like a lot to me, my 2yo DS eats more than that (2 weetabix and a banana for breakfast, sandwiches (2 slices) and 2 yoghurts for lunch, and fish pie/cottage pie/sausages etc for dinner, plus plenty of snacks.

If you're worried, could maybe cut out biscuit-type snacks?

What does she drink?

impressed at the amount of fruit she eats for lunch though

BoysAreLikeDogs · 26/01/2010 20:12

take out the something junky from her lunchbox

use a side plate for her dinner if you are using an adult size plate

exercise? what exercise does she do?

LilyBolero · 26/01/2010 20:14

All sounds nice and healthy, is she active or does she tend to watch a lot of TV/video games? Increasing activity is better than decreasing food if she's very healthy.

Does she have a lot of juice or sugary drinks? Try getting her to drink water or s/s milk.

satc2bringiton · 26/01/2010 20:16

I think that sounds very well balanced.

winnybella · 26/01/2010 20:18

Fruit is very healthy, but does have a lot of sugar and 2 oranges, banana and grapes is a bit much.
How big are her portions for breakfast and dinner?
Does she get any exercise?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 26/01/2010 20:18

I'd take out the fruit winder, it's packed with sugar, she doesn't need this and fruit, she's also having too much fruit for her lunch, maybe 1 orange and some grapes, she doesn't need 2 yogurts a day aswell, these are also packed with sugar.

Cereal and a slice of toast with a glass of fruit juice is OK for breakfast

Lunch: A wholemeal ham and cheese sandwich, 2 different fruits and a yogurt with a drink

Supper: whatever the family is eating but a smaller portion as she's a child.

Maybe a glass of warm milk before bed, this will help her sleep and give her the calcium from the yogurt she doesn't have with her supper.

I think it all sounds really healthy. My children simialr age eat a lot more. I would increase activity level rather than decrease food intake or at least don't decrease her fruit. Yes there is sugar in fruit, but lets not get hysterical. Also, is she realy borderline overweight?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 26/01/2010 20:27

Fruit sugar is different to sugar in processed food (winders/kitkats), fruit is good, too much will keep the little one on the toilet though.

BigTillyMint · 27/01/2010 18:05

It all sounds healthy, but if the portion-size is large, then she may be eating too much.

Does she have any snacks / treats that you haven't remembered?

tassisssss · 27/01/2010 18:12

I don't think it sounds like a lot. Does she have snacks mid morning and mid afternoon too?

I might give her a 2nd piece of bread with lunch and a bit less fruit.

pagwatch · 27/01/2010 18:17

MY DD is 7 and eats much much more than that . But she does 8 hours gym per week, one hour PE, walks to school ( 20 minutes brisk pace), walks the dog for hour plus every week end plus play times, playing in the garden etc etc

What is your DDs excercise level?

frogetyfrog · 27/01/2010 18:19

I dont think it sounds too much either but it does sound quite low fat and low carbohydrate to me to be honest. But I am no nutritionist. There was a programme on the other night about children eating loads of the 5 a day, but not enough fat or carbohydrates. I too would up the bread and potatoes, replace the fruit winder with a good old fashioned pudding (jam sponge or a slice of cake) and then simply get her exercising more!! But then thats just me.

pagwatch · 27/01/2010 19:01

why are we all still answering when OP posted yesterday and doesn't look like she's coming back....

at futile concern

frogetyfrog · 28/01/2010 10:19

Pag - because we all like to sound like experts!
