Does homemade jam/marmalade need to be kept refrigerated?

This might sound a daft question but...I've made some marmalade this weekend and don't know if I need to keep the sealed jars in the fridge or not!

The jars are all re-used ones with safety buttons and the lids were put on when the jam was warm so the buttons have all gone down. Am I right in assuming that they are properly sealed now just like shop bought ones? (and therefore they can be kept in the cupboard until I open them?)

Thanks!

I would think a cool cupboard would be fine.

As long as you sterilised the jars before putting the marmalade in a cupboard will be fine.

I think I've still got some Tayberry jam that I overcooked a few years ago lurking in the back of my cupboards somewhere - must go and dig it out (so solid you can't get a spoon into it

No problem. My dw (Australian) keeps putting open jars in the fridge, and I have to keep taking them out as there isn't enough room in the fridge for things like jars of jam/chutney.

Thanks guys!

The jars were not sterilised before use MunchMummy, I dishwashed them and sealed them when they came out, they were then put (sealed) in hot water to warm them before the Jam went in. I might try the cupboard and see how it goes - I'm sure it won't be about for long, the Jam I made a couple of months ago was eaten quite quickly!
