My cousin (celiacs) and her partner (lactose intolerent) are coming round for dinner at the weekend and I want to be able to cook them something tasty and in line with their dietary requirements - does anybody have any suggestions?

wow, that's a toughie!

You could do a cheese-free risotto, or just have parmesan on the table for sprinking. Don't know how posh you want to get but I do one with lots of lemon and fresh herbs and then toss in smoked salmon strips at the end, as I personally don't think fish and cheese go together that well. Or saffron and lemon and some grilled asparagus and scallops on top.

Or there's a jamie oliver fillet of beef recipe which is pricey but a good show-stopper, where you wrap a fillet joint in parma ham and a layer of herbs and porcini mushrooms, roast it, and serve that with a nice green salad and some baby new potatoes roasted in olive oil.

More casual, curries are good. There's a really good Green Thai paste that comes in a plastic pot with a Thai label on from sainsburys (can check the name if you're interested) rather than an own-brand jar, without any gluten etc. Add some fresh herbs and lime juice to give it bit of zing (maybe check coconut milk for any issues tho).

Starters you could do nibbly mezze things so the coeliac can avoid the gluteny things and her partner can avoid any lactosy things. Puddings probably quite tricky though...

Any of this any good?

that's great thanks for these....I particularly like the sound of the beef wrapped in parma ham - do you have a link to this recipe?

I think these ideas would be great to upload to Mydish if you could get the full recipe - they're making a book out of the best ones with some of the proceeds going to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

I uploaded a fish curry recipe this morning called Coconut Fish Dream....let me know what you think.

Thanks again

Hi Amy,

I am both gluten and lactose intolerant, as is my son, so pretty much everything we cook has to comply! I have found that rather than trying to track down specific recipies (which are sometimes a bit wierd to be honest) I just substitute gluten free flour (most supermarkets have a really good selection now, look out for Dove's Farm etc) and a lactose free margerine (this bit you have to be careful as lots of ones have a bit of milk in, look out for Pure or an olive oil based one, but do check the ingredients. Armed with these you can then do something you are already comfortable cooking and won't get left with a cupboard full of strange ingredients! Worth checking if they are ok with goat or sheeps cheese - eg feta as lots of lactose people are. If the recipe needs milk I just use soya - unsweetened!!
Good luck and have fun!

Hi MummyMellie - Thanks for the tips, that's super helpful. I really want to make it an enjoyable eating experience for them as I'm super they get served up lots of dull dishes when they go to dinner parties as the hosts don't know how to cook for them.

Do you have any interesting recipes you could upload to Mydish as well (see post above to 30 and Lurking) it's a great forum for foodies to get together and share recipes and some of the profits go to GreatOrmond Street.

Check it out and let me know what you think

Hiya
This is the Jamie oliver beef recipe - although I would imagine there might be some copyright issues about reproducing it in another context....

(obviously you'd have to improvise around the knobs of butter!)

Large roast chicken with roast potatoes and sweet potatoes, and green beans flied in lemon and garlic.

For dessert- lemon pavlova, filled with soy cream/lemon curd filling and fresh fruit
