Is Trex ok for toad in the hole?

As title suggest - wondering if Trex vegetable fat will work for toad in the hole in place of the usual lard? Is Trex just a veg substitute for lard or is there something about it which won't work for the recipe?
Thanks

what lard is this?? none in my toad in the hole recipe as far as I remember. some butter I think but isn't it basically a thick pancake batter ie flour milk egg plus sausages?

I haven't made it before but everyone I've spoken to tells me that you get the oven really hot, pop some lard in the cooking tin, heat it to very hot and at that point put the sausages in and pour over the batter.
If you use butter sanfairyann and it works then that's good enough for me as lard isn't a regular visitor to our fridge tbh!

You can use sunflower/veg oil in the tin - preheated natch. You put in about half a centimetre depth.

I just use s splash of sunflower oil, or goose fat, they both work, had never thought of using trex, will try it next time!

goose fat? Something else that I've not bought before, not even for Nigella's famous roast potatoes!

ah I see, oh yeah just stick a bit of oil in the tin to heat up - sunflower does the job fine

duckyfuzz · 15/01/2010 22:02

goose fat for roasties is tip top!

displayuntilbestbefore · 15/01/2010 22:07

that's great thanks - you do realise I am now going to have to cook it several times, using a different fat each time to see which one works best for me!
Thanks for all the tips!

u have to get whatever u use really hot so something that doesn't burn at high temps good - i use sunflower or veg oil as they r good at high temps. butter would def burn and blacken - not sure about lard/trex. Trex is just veg fat i think...?
