Im making my brothers 30th birthday cake (my mum has complete confidence in me, she says) and would like to do a 2 or 3 tiered parcel cake in sponge.

So i put my big square onto a base, cover it in icing etc (do i cover the board in icing too?) and can i then just put my next smaller square sponge cake (at an angle) on top of my bottom layer or does it need supports or anything?

And then if im feeling adventurous, i could put a very samll parcel cake on top, again, same question regarding supports/boards?

Many, many thanks

I am no expert, but I think if you only did two tiers of sponge cake, you might get away with it.

I would err on the side of caution though, especially if you are using a lot of icing, and use dowels to support. If you do this, each cake needs it's own board and the dowels then suport the cake board. (use very thin cake boards for layers other than the base)

I hoep that makes sense....

agree with midori
icing the board as well gives it a neater finish imo
