My Dsil has rung me in tears almost saying they are so skint and they can't pay bills etc, her DH is a builder and hasn't worked since before Christmas, I can't afford to do anything about their bills but thought if I could do a Tesco online order for them (they live the other end of the UK to me) it'd help ease things a little. I don't want to tell her in advance as she'll go mad I fear, but wouldn't turn it away once it was there.

Only problem is I don't know what to get, they have a large chest freezer so frozen stuff is pretty easy, have ordered some meat and poultry and bits like sausages/pies/wedges - what else do you think I should put on the list?

Forgot to say, I can spare around £50 in total to include delivery.

Are you just looking for food ideas? What about things like shampoo, washing powder/liquid, toothpaste etc.

WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 14/01/2010 12:36

oh I hadn't even thought of other stuff apart from food eeek! I suppose loo roll would be a thought?

Milk , bread , cereals , pasta , rice staples and then some treats for the kids ? Bottle wine for them to share ?
Sorry to hear they are struggling hope things pick up for them soon.
You are very thoughtful am sure they will be overwhelmed

Should add that it's lovely of you to do that for them. I'm sure it'll be much appreciated. I know when I'm really skint my mum buying a few odds and ends means a lot.

LoveBeingAMummy · 14/01/2010 12:38

Basic staples that will keep, pasta rice, tinned toms, beans?

Lomond · 14/01/2010 12:39

Loo roll would be a good idea!

WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 14/01/2010 12:59

they'd do the same for us I know.

Do you think it would be best to almost menu plan so I get complete meals, I don't know what's in their store cupboard.

What about things like porridge oats, dried milk, pasta, rice, eggs, flour, butter, loo roll, soap, washing up liquid and soap powder.

Could you perhaps get some things like lentils or dried beans which are cheap but a good and versatile source of protein. If you send flour, your SIL can make her own pancakes and cakes for treats and snacks. She can use dried milk to make porridge and sauces and it lasts longer than fresh.

I'd be tempted to get some mince, some chicken bits, perhaps some sausages and some frozen white fish. Then I would get a couple of bags of frozen mixed veg and perhaps some frozen chopped onions. After that some pasta, rice, tinned toms, tinned tuna, a tin of ham mmaybe some tinned veg like peas and carrots. Tinned fruit like peaches/pineapples/pears. Some cheap teabags or some coffee and something for the children to drink. Flour, eggs, dried milk, porridge oats, sugar, butter, cheese, stock cubes, a bag of lentils, a bag of kidney beans and a bag of chick peas or something, a bag of potatoes and a couple of loaves of bread. Then I would buy some loo roll, soap, toothpaste, washing up liquid and a cheap box of soap powder. If you are careful, you should be able to get all that for around £50 including delivery.

I'm sorry your SIL is in this position, I;ve been there before and it is horrible. I was lucky and my brother helped us out, then. I was overwhelmed and I am sure that your brother and his wife will be, as well. It's a lovely thing to so.

Ahhh thank you for that! am frantically scribbling notes I won't get pulses though, she'd never use them, she's not that kind of a cook.

Right am off to get this put through now, hopefully I can get a slot for tomorrow if I am quick
