Hello, I'm looking for your best, fail-proof, simple, biscuit recipe.

Its for small children (under 5's) and so needs to be friendly both for them to make and to eat!

thanks in advance.

My DCs love these biscuits, to make and to eat and it is easier with a food processor:
200g flour
100g butter
100g sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp mixed spice/allspice
grated rind of orange
grated rind of lemon
milk to mix
Put all dry ingredents in processor and whizz until breadcrumb-y. Add egg and whizz again. Whilst still whizzing, slowly add enough milk until the mixture comes together.
Roll out mix on a floured board to desired thickness - thicker is more chewy and cookie-ish, thinner is crispier. Cut into shapes, place on parchment/greasproof on a baking tray and bake at 170C for 10-15 mins or so until golden/brown/dark, depending on preference. Leave to cool before removing from paper.
Without a processor, they could do it by rubbing in, but it could take ages. Leave to cool before removing from paper. Eat and enjoy.

I saw this one on hairy bikers last week and have baked 2 batches already as dh & ds keep scoffing them too quickly. ds 3.5yrs had great fun making them too.

Empire biscuits
6oz flour
6oz butter
2oz icing sugar (gives finer texture)
2oz cornflour (gives biscuit bit of crunch)

bung all ingredients in a bowl and work butter into dry stuff by hand until looks like breadcrumbs.. then till it forms a ball of dough. roll out to 1/4 inch thick and cut your biscuits out. bake in moderate oven 180°C for about 12mins.. they should come out pale not brown. leave to cool then sandwich 2 together with Seedless raspberry or strawberry jam and add a dollop of icing and (optional) glace cherry on top. you can watch them being made on the bbc website atm. on phone at moment but can paste link tonight if you want..

This was a success with ds (2) over christmas. You have to heat the golden syrup, but you can let it cool enough before mixing that it is quite safe.

It makes quite a lot though, so you may want to halve all quantities.

125g unsalted butter
100g sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
325g plain flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tsp ground ginger

  1. Preheat the oven to 170°C, gas mark 3. Line baking trays with baking parchment. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup in a medium saucepan, stirring occasionally, then remove from the heat.
  2. Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ginger into a bowl and stir the melted ingredients into the dry ingredients to make a stiff dough.
  3. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and roll to a thickness of about 5mm. Dip biscuit cutters into flour before cutting the dough. Place the shapes onto the lined baking trays and bake, in batches, for 9-10 minutes until light golden brown.

These are all fantastic; thank you! I'm planning to do little recipe cards and a cookie cutter as party favours (I reckon its a gift that keeps on giving) instead of the usual plastic rubbish. I may do two or three different ones to keep the kids busy.
