Pie Crust?

I asked Dh what he'd like for tea tonight and he replied, "you know what I've never had for years, a pie crust" Now I have a dim and distant memory of cooking beef veg etc in a casserole dish and attempting to lay pastry over the top of it.

It was an unmitigated disaster, the pastry fell in the dish and was soggy with gravy and that was following burning my fingers trying to lay pastry across a hot dish

Any ideas anyone?

My nan used to half sink a mug into the casserole and lay the pie crust over the top. It stopped the middle sagging into the casserole. When it came to serving she'd just lift off the pie crust and slice it, remove the mug and spoon out the casserole

Thanks Iklboo, just for a second then I thought why is there a spoon in there as well

I'd forgotten about putting something in to hold up/support the pastry so that is a help.

I remember a lot of the pastry fell in the dish from the sides as well so I may need to look into that aspect of it too.

Wish he'd asked for mince and dumplings

You could always make the filling, decant into another dish and put the pastry on so that you aren't trying to put pastry onto a hot dish. Extra washing up, but possibly easier.

Yes thats exactly what I've just done, it made perfect sense so why didn't I think of it years ago[thick emoticon]

I put a thin line of pastry around the dish, brushed it with egg and lay the big sheet of pastry over the top. Fingers crossed, it's just gone in the oven
