Which cheese(s) for lasagne?

I want to make a lasagne and I'm unsure which cheese I could use as an alternative to parmesan.

I have a very strong aversion to parmesan and similar tasting cheeses and would therefore be unable to use even a little of it in the dish or even to handle it.

I'm thinking of using mozarella and ricotta but I need something stronger in there also.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thankyou in advance.

Not sure if lasagne is the right dish for a non cheese person

Leave out the cheese completely and make a white sauce instead, and then grate a littel nutmeg over the top before baking it.

Lasagne doesn't need to have cheese in it.

Another nice alternative is to sautee some finely chopped leeks and mix these with the white sauce.

Are you making a classic bolognesey lasagne?

Cheddar is my cheese of choice for lasagne - I love parmesan but not when it's cooked.

I mash up ricotta and mozarella and use that straight. I don't make it into a sauce.

I sprinkle a mix of grated mozzarella and cheddar between layers and on the top.

I LOVE Lasagne!

I love cheese Cyb almost everything can be improved by adding a little cheese but parmesan is one of my few exceptions.
I really cannot stand it. I couldn't eat if I was paid to do so.

I use strong cheddar in that case. But I make a Jamie lasagne where you layer creme fraiche instead of cheesey or white sauce.

I always use cheddar on lasagne. Not classic, but it's tasty.

StirlingInDaSnowDrift · 12/01/2010 19:11

I do the Jamie one too - but sprinkle the grated cheese on each creme fraiche layer. Mmmmmm

I always do mozarella between the layers with strong cheddar on top. Lovely.

Even if I say it myself...

Thankyou all for the ideas, cheese and non cheese based. They all sound delicious and I think that I'll give them all a try over the next few weeks.

There's no such thing as having too many lasagne in one's freezer after all.
