Can anyone recommend a really good cookery book for young children?

I have several but they are all crap

I want something I can use to cook with dd (4) but as she's just learning to read, I want it to be ultra-simple language.
I want it to be recipes that will appeal to her but not just in a fairy-cakes-with-pink-icing type way.
And it must absolutely be actual cooking, not just Big-Cook-Little-Cook style mashed potato sheep type stuff.

Does such a thing exist?

My sister and I had a ladybird one called 'Cooking with Mother' (not very PC nowadays I know), it was a really well written, incredibly simple book with a few recipes well tailored for very young children and included instructions on things like being careful near the oven and sharp knives and also about washing up afterwards.

It was brilliant and I recommend finding it and buying it, 4 years old is about the right age.

PineappleChunks - I actually have that one too - I agree the language is just right, but the recipes seem a bit naff to me - do you remember that toadstool made out of a hardboiled egg with a tomato on top? I can see dd enjoying making those but not actually eating them....

I accept it possibly doesn't have haute cuisine in there but the fairy cake recipe is the best I have ever found.

Not sure I made any of the others.

What is wrong with a hard boiled toadstool?

clumsymum · 12/01/2010 14:30

I'm told this is very good

Is the fairy cake recipe good? I'm rubbish at them - mine come out all pointy (I even had a thread about it....)
Will dig it out and try that one myself then PineappleChunks.

No, but seriously...

If you could track down a copy of this, it would be brilliant for your dd.

I had a copy of this back in the late 1960's.

A cartoon dog and cat guide you thru the recipes, which are fun and easy.

I wish I could find a copy now.

I used to have this one as a child and it was pretty good. It looks to be out of print now but you could get it from an Amazon seller or eBay. It had teddy ratings to show how difficult the recipes were, and they were mostly fun and child-friendly.

The ubiquitous Annabel Karmel also does this one, but I've no experience of it!
