Please help with my frozen turkey crown dilemma!

OK so I have this big hunk of turkey meat in the freezer, which we were given by my parents after they got it free from their turkey supplier at Xmas. (It's Kelly Bronze so v good quality.)

Unfortunately dh has now confessed to not actually liking turkey

Trying to decide what to do with it. Should I:

  1. have it as a big roast at some point when people come round, even though it will be boring & dh won't enjoy it
  2. defrost, make whole lot into range of things to disguise turkey taste (eg curries, stews, etc) then freeze in portions - the downside is that will fill up the freezer and we will be eating turkey-based meals for weeks
  3. defrost, cut into smaller portions, then rebag and freeze immediately for more gradual use as chicken-breast-substitute in range of meals? That would be my preferred option but I know you're not meant to defrost then refreeze uncooked.
  4. none of the above....

WWYD?
thanks.

Well unless my DP actually hated it, I'd do no.1 (in fact even if he did I'd do no.1 but shove a couple of sausages in for him

Poledra · 12/01/2010 13:39

Definitely not 3! I'd do 1- my DH would eat it anyway, though. He's not too fussy as long as he doesn't have to do any cooking.

MrsJohnDeere · 12/01/2010 13:44

I'd do 2, because I could happily eat curry every night.
Turkey (even good turkey) is something I can tolerate to be polite but don't positively enjoy.

What worries me about the roast option is, what if not only dh but also the other people I make eat it don't really like turkey either?

I suppose an option 5 would be, to cook and rebag in smaller portions and then do the curries etc later.

Cooked turkey would be nice in a pie (with ham, mushrooms, etc).

BadGardener · 12/01/2010 14:24

turkey pie would be lovely, but I'm banned from making anything with pastry atm because we are both trying to lose weight

OK, so you are both trying to lose weight (aren't we all - except the initiator of the "how to put on weight" thread). You could make turkey pie and freeze it. You could also make a cold Turkey & Ham pie, the sort with jellied stock like a Pork Pie, freeze that, and produce it in the summer when you are both past the losing weight bit.
It rings the changes a bit, and is really easy. You can cram in a lot of meat into a thin pastry outer. I did one with a small turkey crown, ham and some leftover venison in a 10" cake pan after Christmas, and only finished it on Sunday. It makes a change from curry and risotto.

That's a very good Cunning Plan Silverwoodhelpdesk. It would also give me an excuse to learn how to make raised crust pastry.
I could do a smaller one with part of the crown and curries etc with the rest....

You could try raised crust pastry; I just lined a cake pan with a shortcrust (half lard, half butter), although the proper way to do it is probably with a hot water pastry.
