Balsamic Vinegar - can you recommend a good - but reasonably cheap one?

I love Balsamic vinegar - use it all the time, but money is getting tight and I can't really pay out the extortionate amount of money on a bottle that I used to. Can anyone recommend some that costs less than £3.00 a bottle?

In my opinion you get what you pay for. TheGiftofOil.co.uk is lush (the best I've ever tasted), but ££££! Please let me know if you ever find a cheapy good one. Maybe a glaze rather than an oil would work better for your bucks?

I jsut can't justify the expense anymore but I HAVE to have balsamic vinegar on my salads and in my bolognaise etc! I see the supermarket own brands and am scared to try them! Can anyone help?

Sainsburys own is really nice! I use loads of it and have an expensive bottle as a treat occasionally.

I had one from Waitrose in a posh bottole (about £12??) which was lovely.

Then Jamie Oliver's which was ok (£5ish)

And now Sainsbury's So Organic which is adequate. You def get what you pay for.

I think I will buy another expensive bottle for special occasions.

Devil, are there diff options of the Sainsbury's one? If so which is the one you recommend? Mumof2 - will look into the so organic one. I just want one for everyday use that isn't totally ewwww (screwed up face emoticon!) when you taste it!

Get the glaze, they do it at Sainsburys and Waitrose. It's only £3-4 ish. And it's tasty.

the lidl one is nice.

I'm about to come to the end of a bottle of Aspalls organic balsamic vinegar, and will probably get another one. I'm pretty sure it cost under £3.

Also got a tesco balsamic glaze which I put on loads of things too.

I currently have the Sainsbury's organic Balsamic and I really like it - I can't remember how much but it wasn't expensive.

Holymoly321 · 13/01/2010 11:04

thanks all - what is a balsamic glaze and how do you use it differently to balsamic vinegar?

The glaze is a bit sweeter, and you use much less of it. It's lush.

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 13/01/2010 19:39

The Sainsbo's organic one is good; the Sainsbo's Vintage one is gorgeous but more than 3 squid a bottle, sadly.

It is true that you get what you pay for with balsamic, but you can doctor a bad one. Take a cheap bottle, reduce it a bit with added sugar. If you reduce it way down until it is syrupy, you have made a balsamic glaze. Makes a really cheap balsamic much better tasting (and less acrid!).

Spottyotter · 15/01/2010 23:06

Make your own glaze. Buy a big bottle o cheep balsamic vinegar. Bung it in a pan, and reduce it by half..... But this is the important bit...OPEN YOUR KITCHEN WINDOW, DOOR and PUT THE EXTRACTOR FAN ON FULL!!! I cannot stress this enough! It will stink your kitchen out but at the end of it you will have lovely cheap balsamic glaze.
