Feeding a vegan, lactose intolerant with a wheat allergy? How?

snigger · 11/01/2010 19:47

Cheese is at the centre of my personal universe, so I'm all out of ideas.

Oh, and it's got to be palatable to non-vegans, non-lactose intolerant wheat-eaters.

It's like some hybrid of Masterchef crossed with Challenge Anneka.

Help me, I'm pacing.

Veggie curry and rice?
Lentil chilli and rice or a baked spud?
Homemade potato wedges with stuffed peppers and salad?

gloomgirl · 11/01/2010 19:53

ok, get some books?

I'm a previous vegan so can help there but and the lactose intolerant thing s irrelevant because f the vegan issue-the wheat thing?

Well I spose rye bread, flour etc. corn based pasta?

CMOTdibbler · 11/01/2010 19:54

Is this a casual supper, or full blown dinner party kind of thing ? Are you up for adventurous cooking or does it need to be pretty simple ?

mathanxiety · 11/01/2010 19:58

Who are these people? Sorry, but they sound like a lot of seriously hard work to feed...

Mongolia · 11/01/2010 20:00

I feel for you, I have a child who is allergic to most legumes, dairy, and until recently, wheat...

Everytime I invite his friends who are vegetarian-glutten free I worry for a week on what to do, then cook something that most of the times is HATED by everyone.

I continue inviting them because they are so nice, and because I know their poor mother goes through exactly the same when DS is invited

CMOTdibbler · 11/01/2010 20:01

Yeah, don't invite any of us who have food allergies

If they only have an issue with wheat, then rye may be OK, but you'd have to check carefully - it isn't gluten free

Metatron · 11/01/2010 20:18

mushroom rissotto, roast veg, peppers etc.

bloomingnora · 11/01/2010 20:21

Do a vegetable curry and rice and then make home made bhajis (gram flour used to make them is gluten free and they are really quick and easy) also puppadums, mango chutney, lime pickle, onion salad etc. A good basis for curry is grated onion and a tin of tomatoes - it will give a really nice thick sauce.

Sazisi · 11/01/2010 20:23

Minestroni made with rice pasta

Mongolia · 11/01/2010 20:27

I'm taking refuge on risottos lately...

Metatron · 11/01/2010 20:38

Mongolia - are your risottos, erm not wonderful?

Carrot and coriander soup, with oatcakes for the wheat intolerant.

Mongolia · 11/01/2010 21:13

Yes, but I guess I'm getting my guests bored... that's the only thing we all can eat: Spinach risotto with lactose free cheese

Metatron · 11/01/2010 21:30

um, yummy

mathanxiety · 12/01/2010 03:46

My DCs are allergic to milk and milk products as well as beef they bring their own food to parties and if they're invited over for dinner with friends, same with one DD's friend who has coeliac disease she brings her own gluten free food if invited anywhere. Basically, I don't really trust the other parents not to serve what the DCs can't eat, and I also don't want them putting themselves out or even excluding my children because of dietary issues.

SoleLundyFastnet · 12/01/2010 04:51

Mexican food is really good for this - I used to be vegan and my best friend is coeliac (has to eat gluten-free). You can include dishes like rice, vegetable chilli (with kidney beans, but lots of veg and soy mince, or better without!), a couple of salsas, guacamole, refried beans, soured cream for those that can, wheat-free tortillas, salads etc. People just dip in and have whatever they want...

SofaQueen · 12/01/2010 06:50

What about a sweet potato, butternut squash and chickpea tagine served with quinoa instead of couscous?

-or-

Soba noodles with seaweed, cucumbers, red peppers served with a sesame/soy/mirin (and a touch of wasabi) sauce seved with agadashi tofu?

snigger · 12/01/2010 18:27

Ok:

Minestrone with rice pasta is a good one, will do.

I'm going to do mixed salads : tomato & basil salad, green salad, potato salad with a vinaigrette dressing.

Then I'm going to do a moussaka with lentils rather than lamb, and white sauce made with arrowroot and soya milk.

I'll do roasted veg too, although the japanese suggestions sound cool

This is a pre-funeral dinner for many many people, and I have to say a big big thank you for all your suggestions, because this is so out of my area.

A fruit salad

Sorry - not helpful but what a nightmare.

More seriously, I've got a recipe for a stuffed pumpkin somewhere (stuffed with rice) with a tomato sauce (I think). It sounded quite good and I was considering it for veggie guest at Christmas. Do you want me to look it our for you?

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 13/01/2010 05:57

Indian food is good here. Channa dhal (chickpea curry), lentil curry, rice, chutneys, you could do a spinach and paneer dish using tofu instead of paneer.

Doesn't moussaka have cheese in it?

Alternatively, can you do some things vegan, other things gluten free, and let people choose?
