Hi - could I brown a beef joint in the frying pan then do it in a slow cooker? I was thinking I could just put it on some onions and gravy in there. If it would take 1 hr in a conventional oven how long would it be in a slow cooker?

I do mine in the sc all the while and usually have a big potraosting/brisket piece and leave it for about 6-8hrs on low.

Yes and all day. Tis yummy.

countrybump · 10/01/2010 11:02

Yum, depends on the size of the meat, but about 8hrs and it will melt in your mouth, delicious! I sometimes brown mine with a little mustard powder to add flavour.

do you brown it first? And how much liquid do you put in - half way up it or cover it etc?

if you have mustard in a jar you could just add a bit to the liquid you use in the cooker. If you rub a little flour on to the meat before browning it, it helps to thicken the gravy that you cook it in a little.

thanks what about the volume of liquid to put in the slow cooker?

I never really know how much to put in! I think if you are planning to use it as gravy then put enough in for you to make gravy with. It doesn't need much liquid to actually cook in though, and if you add too much you will have to thicken it at the end of the cooking. I wouldn't cover it with liquid though, maybe just half way up.

I put less than a cupfull in, in fact I usually put in a glass of red wine and leave it at that, with chopped onion and a little wholegrain mustard.

I have red wine and wholegrain mustard, smashing! wish me luck, as a very recent convert from 20 years of vegetarianism my meat cooking is a bit hit and miss at the mo.
many thanks everyone

yes I did it last week.

I'm going to make a steak pie with the left overs this week.

AvadaKedavra · 10/01/2010 12:22

I put a wee dribble to cover the base of the pot is all

mandajane81 · 10/01/2010 21:35

hello
I'm a new convert to slow cooking and i did that today, browned the joint b4 hand chopped an opnion and 3 carrots but 2 garlic cloves in jont and poured a little bit of water over it. Put it on to slow heat last night at 10pm and was ready at midday and it was the most tender bit of beef i have ever had even my DS ate all of the meat!!!

cupofteaplease · 12/01/2010 10:41

Oh crap- I put a joint of beef in my slow cooker about an hur or so ago and I didn't brown it first- does that matter?

MadameCastafiore · 12/01/2010 10:45

I always stick in an oxo cube, a little red wine and a tin of chopped tomatoes into mine as well as a handful of whole shallots.

Is DSs fave meal!

ProfYaffle · 12/01/2010 10:48

I cooked a leg of mutton (similar in texture to beef) in the slow cooker at the weekend. I just bunged it in, switched on and that's it, no liquid or anything. Left it in there for about 6 hrs and it was amazing, meltingly tender.

(btw, I'm a relatively new meat eater following 20 veggie years too)

ProfYaffle · 12/01/2010 10:49

I didn't brown it either btw.

mrstimlovejoy · 13/01/2010 13:26
