I think the idea of wrapping Barbie's legs sounds sensible. You don't know if the dog has been playing with 'her'.

I've made several Barbie cakes - I'm hopeless at cake decorating and these were easy and looked OK.

I have what is known in NZ as a "Dolly Varden" cake tin (rounded cone shape) which is perfect for the skirt. I use a cake recipe that would usually go in a 23cmish tin, it takes longer to cook in the shaped tin and I put tinfoil over the top for the last 15 mins.

I buy the 'ballerina' style Barbies - i.e. Snow White or Swan Lake, as these come dressed in short sticky-out ballet dresses, which cover the messy bit at the top where Barbie's legs are stuck into cake.

I wrap Barbie's legs in clingfilm, and also cover her hair to keep it out of the way when icing. Cut an inverted cone out of the top of the cake and shove her in.

I just use butter icing, coloured bright pink, slap it on and stick on lollies/icing flowers etc.

I remove the Barbie before cutting the cake, remove the clingfilm and present it to birthday girl.

How did it go, Pelvicfloornomore? I am embarking on mine tomorrow . . .

Beauregard · 14/01/2010 22:57

Well i have had a hell of a day ,been so busy and i even managed to get the cake doneAnd it actually looks bloody good!
Made a madeira cake and covered with white regal icing and cut out butterflies and attached over the dress.I accessorised them with sugar hearts in the centre and flowers at the base. The only problem i had was getting the icing over the cake evenly .So it ended up with more icing at the front. But i used a doiley to make a train at the back to even it out and disguise the back. And i put some sugar flowers on.
Feeling very pleased with myself.
Will put a piccy on as soon as i can.
Thanks for the advice

Wow Pelvicfloornomore, that cake looks fab! Mine looked slightly less good (pic on profile now) as it was made in a bowl and not a tin, but DD was impressed and had a good party I think!

micku5 · 17/01/2010 16:54

Pelvicfloornomore the cake looks fab. My friend has asked me to make a cake for her dd and i would like to make a trial one first, could i have the recipe for the madeira cake that you used.

Many thanks

Beauregard · 17/01/2010 20:55

Thanks
Yours looks great too Bramshott.I love the colour .

The recipe is the one that came with the tin it didnt have timing or temps so i had to cross fingers.
12oz marg
12oz caster sugar
6 eggs
8oz of self raising flour
8oz plain flour
pinch salt
grated rind of 2 lemons

Line tin with circle of greaseproof paper
Cream marg and sugar together until light and fluffy
Beat eggs together in a bowl
Sieve the flours and salt together
Add the sifted flour and egg alternately to marg and sugar
stir in grated lemon rind
Pour in tin
stand tin on baking sheet
Bake in preheated very slow oven(i worked it out to gas mark 3 or 150 c for 2 hours.
The cake will cook slowly because of the depth of the tin so if the top browns too much cover it with a circle of greaseproof paper
When cooked allow to stand for 10 mins and then trim off any cake that has risen above the tin
Make hole for Barbie to stand in then cover with lemon curd and icing.
