Porridge in the sloiw cooker?

Love to have hot porridge in the morning, but can't deal with doing it in the morning. DD2 wants breakfast as soon as she wakes up at about 6.30am and will cry till she gets it and DD1 is usually very grumpy first thing, so cooking porridge for 20 mins or so is the last thing on my mind so we always end up with boring weetabix etc.

Just wondering if anybody has tried doing it in the slow cooker overnight?

Porridge FFS!

If your kids are so hungry when they wake up at 06.30am then:

a) make sure they eat well the night before
and
b) give em some f**cking toast

And maybe give them a chocolate button while you wait for the toast to pop up if you can't bear the sound of them complaining!!

Well I tried it and had 5 happy children with empty bowls this morning. Was great to have it ready for when they all came down and no messing about or whining while waiting for it to cook/cool down.

And no microwave ding from my mum to wake them all up before the crack of dawn.

we get a tub of porridge from asda 'simply porridge' it comes with a scoop, 1 scoop of the porridge, 4 scoops of milk and 3 mins in the microwave, done

But porridge takes, like , seconds to make. I just put some boiled water from the kettle into a saucepan, add the oats and by the time they have soaked up the water, they are done. I then add milk and brown sugar.

purpleduck I do the same - water from the kettle covering the oats- stir a few times over 3 -4 mins and add some cream , raisins and dried apple if it is for the DC's

So easy too - I never get this 'slaving over the stove' thing. I can make it in the time it takes to do toast or cereal.

I totally understand that you find it hard to get porridge on the table in time before the kids start screaming, mine was the same when they were little.

I found that although it wasn't great getting up before them (we're talking 5 am), it actually was very therapeutic to make porridge on my own and just be able to have 5 min alone before it all started.

I did for a while give them corn flakes while I made the porridge, but I found that my mood was so much better if I was the first to get up.

Haven't got a low cooker myself, but I always micro waved them (Supermarkets own organic brand) and I would actually put the bowl just out side the kitchen door to cool down ;)

We always have a mixture of cinnamon and raw can sugar (half of each) sprinkled on top with a small knob of butter, it's delicious!

i've done it twice, varying the quantities. its horrid and took me ages to soak/clean the burnt bits off the bottom of the bowl. much quicker to do in pan

I remember seeing a big urn of porridge bubbling away on the servery in a hotel in scotland (I don't know if it had been on all noght, or just since the chef got in in the morning, but it was being served with salt, sugar, honey or marmite! In fact the marmite was very nice in it. It became a savoury dish, but very warming if braving the outdoors at several degrees below!

My pot's always been okay. But I have also seen this way of doing it, if it's a problem.....

125g/4.5oz jumbo rolled oats
pinch salt to taste (optional)
250ml / 9fl oz cold water

Place the oats and salt in a heatproof bowl that fits inside your slow cooker.
Pour cold water over the top, but do not stir.

Place the bowl in the slow cooker dish and carefully pour in enough cold water around the outside to come about one third of the way up the sides of the bowl.

Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 9-10 hours.
Stir well. Serve with milk or cream, sugar or syrup.

humptynumpty yes in the slowcook.
It did develop a slight crust over the edges, but nothing major and was washed out in minutes.

This was the first thing I made in my slow cooker a couple of weeks ago, but I wasn't impressed. It came out like glue. I think the secret is using pinhead or steelcut oats rather than rolled oats. Perhaps putting it in a bowl inside the slow cooker also makes a difference like paisleyleaf suggested.

I'm going to stick with the microwave but the one thing I always do wrong is put it in a container that is too small and I end up with a bubbling pile of porridge at the bottom of the microwave!

When I have done it in the microwave, or only for 5 mins in the hob, the oats haven't really absorbed the liquid properly so its not creamy and the oats don't seem soft enough?

Can completly relate to not having a chance to get it ready in the morning. I know somebody suggested giving a banana or something while you cook it, which is all great if your dining table/high chair is in your kitchen. Mine isn't and I wouldn't leave my 2 alone with food. DD2 is 8 months and is very dificult around food and wants it straight away. I know she needs to learn to wait, but still not very compatable with a hot stove of porridge that needs stiring and she is trying to grab anything that looks like food.
