re your lighter baking. God idea. sue lawrence has a section in her baking book which includes the usual suspects but good to highlight them - lower fat carrot cake, banana bread, scones that sort of thing

dizzydixies · 09/01/2010 18:24

pointydig - Good Food magazine also takes a lot of classic recipes and makes them lighter without loosing the taste iyswim?

MmeLindt - you shall have bacon butties whenever you like

As others have said as mother of a coeliac a gluten-free cake or biscuit option would be fantastic. There are lots of great recipes that anyone would enjoy with or without a gluten intolerance. Favourites round here are Claudia Roden's orange and almond cake. Also just bought a book called 'The gluten-free cookbook for kids' Adriana Rabinovich-seems pretty good.
Cornflakes or polenta make great coating for fish/chicken nuggets. Genius gluten-free bread is the best-available in Tesco or Waitrose.
Yet to find a local cafe that cater to coeliacs in any way although Costa now do a chocolate brownie. Mine is not keen on baked potatoes or omelettes so our cafe options are severely limited-usually hot chocolate.

dizzydixies · 10/01/2010 08:49

I'll have a look at those books, thanks LadyG

Hello, yes just a reminder to all, first and foremost not to start threads in chat if you may want to refer to them again

BUT if you do start a chat thread and find that it's super useful, PLEASE let HQ know. Just report it and ask that we move it, it takes us about 25 seconds to move a thread while it's still active but when it's gone, it's gone
TIA

Hello! Sorry to be late to this thread. I grew up in St Andrews and it has made me quite homesick.

I know of a cafe in London that sounds like it has a similar vibe to the one you are aiming for, and the thing they do that I really like is offer all sandwiches as salads and vice versa - so you can have falafel and humous on pita bread or with cucumber, tomato, avocado and salad. Ditto chicken and avocado; ham and cheese; smoked salmon and cream cheese; spinach, garlic mushroom, red onion and parmesan (with optional crispy bacon, mmmm). Cheese and (delicious, home-made) pickle becomes a ploughman's. Actually all of these are good with extra avocado too. All the soups are home-made and the cakes baked at home by friends of the cafe. They also serve babycinos ('fluffies' elsewhere on this thread) and have a box of toys and photocopies of really good part-started drawings for children to finish, done by local art students (underneath this cafe is a gallery so this is kind of their theme).

If possible, I would consider doing a 'tasting plate' of cakes, ie slivers of a selection of them. The cafe I mention above always did one cake served in tiny portions, eg flapjacks or brownies, for about 40p a go, so you could have a bite of something sweet with your coffee or give one to your toddler.

Also, I recommend these tea bags which are completely delicious.

Good luck with this - it sounds brilliant. Well done for getting off to such a great start.

I have done some delish gluten free cookies if anyone is interested. You know, for your big chunkie counter top cookie jars.

MY cafe would also have a nice selection of cupcakes, with poured fondant icing in pastel colours, with a dainty motif or decoration on top. Even little boys love such cupcakes. A nice treat with the babyccino and marshmellows. And not forget the fruitsalad with nice chunks of melon, added rasberries and blueberries.

Traybake of the day. Nice apple strudel, rasberry and coconut crumble, as well as chuncky brownies and country style flapjacks.

This is supposed to be the first day of my diet. I should leave this thread and go make a granary sandwich with mackerell in tomato, sigh.

dizzydixies · 11/01/2010 16:09

thanks thereistheball - feel free to pop in if I ever get it up and running and if you're visiting

Quint - I'd love a copy of that recipe please

oliviaMumsnet sorry am a fool

dizzydixies · 11/01/2010 16:10

thereistheball - teapigs catalogue already on file they've sent me loads of info already about what they supply etc etc - all looks fab

Habbibu · 11/01/2010 16:30

dizzy! Cakes like Manna's and you're sorted... This is exciting - can you open in time for me weaning ds - BLW specials...

Habbibu · 11/01/2010 16:30

So do you bake for Manna, then? Which are yours?

Habbibu · 11/01/2010 16:32

oh, and North Point in St A is my favourite atm.

CMOTdibbler · 11/01/2010 16:41

Dizzy - I did think of something else. As a community cafe, it's nice if you have the capacity for a volunteer whose remit is carrying trays for those who need a hand, sitting and having a chat with those who are on their own and look like they'd like it, etc.

When DS was a baby and I was pretty lonely, I used to go into a church run cafe, and it was lovely to have a bit of a chat with someone there

dizzydixies · 11/01/2010 16:49

CMOT - all in the remit

Habbibu - yes I do how is DS doing? are you well

I too like North Point but always find it a touch hectic - am afraid my heart belongs to Harbour House

Habbibu · 11/01/2010 16:54

Ooh - haven't tried Harbour House. NP menu is great, though. DS is gorgeous. Email me your Manna days and I'll walk down with him whrn it's a bit less slippy.

dizzydixies · 11/01/2010 18:14

oh lovely, a new baby to sniff cuddle

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 12/01/2010 09:36

here's the website of that book i was telling you about

completely fascinating, i've just wasted half an hour reading it... but buy the book for the story of the students and the numbers and the black seed pearls.
