Chocolate buns/fairy cakes/cupcakes?

I normally make plain fairy cakes for the DDs to ice, decorate and take to school on their birthdays. This year DD1 wants chocolate ones. Excuse the novice question but can I just add some cocoa to my much-loved foolproof food-processor fairy cakes recipe? Or does anyone have a lovely new recipe for me to use?

And what do I ice them with? (I normally just do icing sugar and water.)

These ones look ok but I don't want to make muffin-sized ones. And I really need to ice and decorate them the night before.

If you have a trusted fairy cake recipe, just weigh out the flour, then take out 2 tbsp of flour and replace them with 2 tbsp of cocoa powder and carry on as normal.

Like Stirling,I also replace a bit of flour with the cocoa powder.
If you add a little milk to the mix they will be even fluffier and extra light.

Thanks Stirling and display. I do use milk in my trusty recipe

What's the simplest thing to ice them with the night before?

yes ice with melted choc if you like, or you can add drinking choc to glace icing or buttercream

OK, here's my plain fairy cakes recipe:

Makes 12 cakes

125g SR flour
125g unsalted butter, softened
125g caster sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
3 tbsp milk

Oven 180C / 160 fan / gas mark 4

Mix everything except milk in food processor.

Gradually add milk; continue processing till mixture has reached dropping consistency.

Half-fill paper cases; cook 15-20 mins till risen and golden brown.

I replaced 2tbsp of flour with cocoa as suggested - worked a treat. Made loads today to freeze for the big day, and they're delicious (of course we had to taste a few ).

Many thanks all
