Online grocery shopping

Has anyone done a shop from Tesco which has been unsatisfactory? I did an order on Sunday and it was duly delivered as promised on Monday. There were however 10 items missing which were out of stock. Fair enough, but these items were non-perishables like nappies and batteries. When i talked to customer services they said the best day for internet shopping was a Monday to deliver on Wednesday to ensure maximum stock at the shop. So 24hour internet shopping is only really worth doing on Monday! That really defeats the object. We are a one car family and that is not available to me during the day, so this service could be a real help. But as I was back at the local shops this morning buying what the supermarket had run out of I doubt whether I will try again just yet. Any one tried Asda online?

Bee, I have used Tesco and stuff is often out of stock. I think you can set up your profile so that they will make substitutions for you if your chosen brand is not available, but I haven't gone for that.
I'm not terribly happy with Tescos because the branch they use in SE London is really rubbish, stocking hardly any of our preferred brands. But they do always come on time and it seems quite an efficient service overall.
We have also used Sainsburys and they were hopeless. The second delivery we had just failed to materialise until one hour later and then the store rang to say we couldn't have it that day, how about two days later. When we said we'd just cancel, they told us they had already debited our bank account, but that we would be refunded immediately (well over £70 I might add). A MONTH later, checking the statement, we found no refund. We had to ring the HQ in Bristol to get the matter resolved and to this day we have had no apology from the store. Completely useless.

I've given up on Tesco's chiefly because so much I had delivered was ridiculously close to its use by date. Also, they seem to know the one ingredient which is absolutely vital for your evening meal because you can guarantee that no matter what it is, it will be the one that's "out of stock". I just found that all too often, I was making subsequent trips to the supermarket which defeated the original purpose.

I use Tesco internet shopping and have been quite pleased with the service on the whole. Things are often out of stock but if you allow subsitutes you normally get something. I manage to do the ordering whilst at work which saves so much time (even if I do have to nip in to the store for the odd item) and the staff at our local store are very friendly. One moan though. A couple of months ago we were charged for an item that wasn't delivered. Only a jar of peanut butter but on principle I wanted a refund. I phoned the local store to be put through to a central number, who took the details and said that the local store would have to do the refund...Ok..inefficient but as long as my money was refunded...except over 2 months and several phone calls later I still hadn't see a refund. I finally got it sorted (I hope!) this morning....

I haven't used Tesco but I was going to use Iceland and even got a catalogue. But then I was told they would charge £4 for taking the order via Internet or telephone.

Janh · 26/06/2001 14:36

jbr, i think tesco charge £5!

but if you have a local iceland and spend more than £25 they will deliver it for nothing (you still have to go there and go round with your trolley, but then they will keep the frozen stuff frozen etc and deliver it in a 2-hr window of your choice.)

at least they used to...ours shut down a bit ago, the next nearest did it the last time i asked but that was a few months back.

Hmonty · 26/06/2001 14:49

Tesco do charge £5 delivery....but I save that much (at least) everytime I shop. With internet shopping I always have a list and very rarely impulse buy....Saves a fortune...and no screaming kids or husband who runs off to 'save a place in the queue' when I've only gone down the first aisle.

I have used Sainsburys and Tesco home delivery services. Sainsburys in our area was rubbish, so I've swapped to Tesco and have been very pleased so far (last 2 months). I think home delivery is absolutely fantastic. I also save loads of money as it is so much harder to impulse shop and it is so fab not to have to lug heavy bags and a toddler. I do still do some grocery shopping locally but that is a few small items and is a pleasure rather than a chore. I also save so much time. I can do my weekly shop in less than 15 mins - in my time short week that is well worth £5.
There is definitely huge regional variations in service quality, which I think is due to the quality of your delivery store - if that makes sense.

Mooma · 26/06/2001 15:55

I've used Asda, Tesco & Sainsbury's. I've come to accept that there will always be some items out of stock, so try not to be reliant on one thing. Sainsburys were OK but the first time I used them, forgot to deliver my frozen stuff, so had to return. Tesco comes from our local store and they are efficient and very helpful if things go wrong. They will send things out if they've made a mistake and forgotten something. Asda were also reliable, and if you spent more than £90, there was no delivery charge, but I prefer the range of products stocked by the other two.
I started ordering at the beginning of the week, since I never booked early enough for a weekend slot, and there does seem to be better stock availability. As you say, Bee, hardly a 24/7 service.

Jbr · 26/06/2001 17:28

I actually like going shopping. I like looking around. I did buy a TV over the Net but I do enjoy physically going to the shops.

Janh · 26/06/2001 18:19

jbr, in that case you should definitely give iceland a try. you do the shopping and they do the shlepping!

Hi- first post, so I hope this is helpful. I use almost all of the online grocery companies (ASDA is the only online supermarket I haven't used - they don't deliver here) and have found them generally to be ok. For a long time I was concerned about the delivery charges but I found OnlineGroceryStore.co.uk where you can compare delivery costs and minimum order values - these change all the time, so I tend to just use the cheapest.

Lots of people recommend MySupermarket - I tried it because it compares prices between all the stores, but it only works if every store has every item you want - which they never do!

Last tip - it's worth signing up wit more than one because they all want you to come back. So every now and again you get a nice £10 off email! It's nice to be wanted!!

Annnie · 28/11/2008 08:21

Errr.......sorry folks . Just realised how old that thread is. I imagine all of you are online shopping experts by now. I hope my post wasn't too useless

Tee2072 · 28/11/2008 08:25

I have been using Tesco for delivery for about 2 years and while there has been the occasional problem, mostly I really like them. Even if things are out of stock, they substitute something else that works.

Also, if something is forgotten, better to go through their online help to report it. I have always done this and gotten my refund within a week.

Annnie · 28/11/2008 10:10

Totally agree with Tee2072 on this - I've never had a problem with getting refunds. If the goods were damaged or not up to scratch, call or use the online form and they will refund the purchase.

landnsdad · 08/12/2008 16:00

We use tescos and no problems except checkthe sell bys on the yoghurts....

for all baby food and finger foods we use and independent online store
