What are the rules for freezing and then re-freezing?

So for example, is it okay to:

  1. Use bought-frozen fish to make a fish pie, and then freeze portions of the pie to be re-heated at a later date.
  1. Freeze fresh meat as soon as you buy it and then cook a meal later (say a stew), and then freeze that meal in portions for reheating at a later date.

This is in relation to meals for babies/toddlers.

My mum has told me both of the above are okay because they are being frozen in a different cooked form, whilst others I know think you should never re-freeze under any circumstances.

Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, it is OK to defrost raw stuff, cook, then refreeze.

if the product is raw when first frozen then it is fine to defrost, cook and then refreeze it.

from food standards agency:

If you defrost raw meat or fish and then cook it thoroughly, you can freeze it again, but remember never reheat foods more than once

Thanks Lowlevel. I thought so, as have been doing so for some time, to no ill effect. But some friends recently disagreed that it was safe, and I started to doubt myself!

What everyone else says, you can cook frozen meat and then freeze the cooked food again.
