potato ricer?

Shall I get one?

Are they worth it?

If so, which brand would you recommend?

We love mash potato but I've heard that if you rice them they are so beautiful they don't need butter or cream. Bit skeptical but hey will give it a go if you lot recommend.

What do you all think?

I like mine, purely because I am very lazy and you can make mash without bothering to peel potatoes .

I don't get it. What's the point? What's wrong with a saucepan and a tato masher? Life's to short.....

Only a convert in the last year, but my mash is restaurant standard, completely smooth, creamy and light. Doesn't have time to get cold as it's actually quicker to use the ricer.

Lonicera · 06/01/2010 21:44

I always peel my potatoes and cut them into large chunks before boiling. It is then really quick to zap them through the ricer.

I add butter and milk as normal

The resulting mash is fab

We have only had the ricer for a few months, but find it very good.

does anyone know if S&M still sell them? Twill save me a trip to see John in this weather.

StirlingInDaSnowDrift · 06/01/2010 23:30

Bottom drawer, under the hob - well that is where mine is

chaostrulyreigns · 06/01/2010 23:49

Good thought - I have a little cupboardy thing at the bottom of my cooker.

Trouble is when I get on the floor to look I will actually see all the nasties under there and feel obliged to clean up.

Littlepurpleprincess · 08/01/2010 08:53

This is crazy. My mash is smooth and lump free, and it's one of the quickest things you can cook. Don't waste your money. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Mash is so quick and easy, you don't need to buy extra to make it quicker and easier. Just add some butter and a drop of milk. Simple.

I love mine, in fact i was never bothered about mash till i got one

Perfect mash with a ricer

boil spuds
drain and put back in pan on the switched off ring to get rid of all moisture
put spuds into bowl
use potatoe ricer to put back into pan
Add melted/warmer butter and milk (or melted butter and cream) plus s&p
stir and enjoy

Adding warmed/melted butter milk stops it from going cold as you are not putting stone cold butterlthough the mash and you just stir it in rather than having to melt it.

Its very quick to do, certainly no longer then with a masher.

CTR, I wish you hadn't brought S&M into a discussion of ricers. The concept is truly appalling.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 08/01/2010 09:35

I used to find that our ricer made the mash taste a bit odd - like there was a bit of flavour of potato skin in there. Anyway, it broke towards the end of last year, and I haven't replaced it, so now I have to peel potatoes again, and with three hungry boys and a hungry dh, that means lots and lots of potatoes!

CymbidiumHybrid · 08/01/2010 09:39

We love ours, use it all the time. It's the best kitchen gadget we have ever bought.

We got ours from Lakeland a few years ago and have never looked back.

chaostrulyreigns · 08/01/2010 20:15

CAUP now I have an image on my head I just can't shake.

Don't think I'm going to be able to rice now without a knowing smile on my face.
