What can I do with 3 kg of brussels sprouts?

I've got a huge pile of sprouts (uncooked) left over from Christmas; any ideas? I was thinking maybe soup or would that be gross?

Other things I have in abundance following the departure of 30+ family members include carrots, parsnips, kippers and pate. If we get snowed in it's going to be a weird few days' eating.

Throw them away immediately .

Not massively helpful I know

I do hope for the sake of your intestine that you manage to get to the shop soon .

Shred and stirfry wioth garlic, soy, ginger and a pinch of sugar and some sherry, or fry with chopped up bacon.

The carrots and parsnips whould be chopped up and boiled (remember carrot takes longer than parsnip) adding turnip if you have it.Then mash it.

The most delicious fragrant mash oyu can think of, and can be frozen and reheated too.

Kippers I'd do in a kedgeree affair or alone.

You could try pickling some. I should imagine it would be something like red cabbage, only green!

[awaits major explosion from vacinity of duffpancake]

I think travellingwilbury has the right idea. Not usually an advocate of wasting food but 3kg of sprouts- what were you thinking when you bought them

pinkmagic1 · 05/01/2010 17:48

Chuck them in the bin, evil things. The work of the devil!

MaryMungo · 05/01/2010 17:50

Roasted brussel sprouts are lovely. They are also good steamed, then added to stew. Don't cook them in the stew! I know this from experience

Claire2301 · 05/01/2010 17:52

Sprout soup is actually nice. Cut sprouts, add onion, potato and seal. Add stock to cover the veg the continue as normal.

moondog · 05/01/2010 17:55

Seal?
Where d'you buy that then?

SnowMuchToBits · 05/01/2010 18:04

You could send some to my ds - he loves them. In fact the most noteworthy news he had from his first day of term was the fact that there were Brussels sprouts as part of his school lunch!

TheInvisibleHand · 05/01/2010 18:08

We had a sprout and chestnut soup - it was pretty good.

Disenchanted3 · 05/01/2010 18:09

brussel sprouts and kippers? bet your house stinks!

duffpancake · 05/01/2010 18:11

Thanks for interesting suggestions! I actually quite like them-- not sure if I still will after eating 3 kilos, but have a pathological aversion to waste. I didn't buy them, they were bought by well-meaning relatives and then forgotten about.

cut them up and use them as grit so you can go to the shop and buy something edible?

Batteryhuman · 05/01/2010 18:11

Compost

duffpancake · 05/01/2010 18:12

Dis-- not yet, but it's going to!

Fortunately for humanity, noone can get up our driveway at the moment.

Blanche and freeze for various Sunday lunches...same with parsnips. Can't help with kippers and paté though...just eat them?

lambanana · 05/01/2010 19:37

cook them with the carrots and parsnips, mash up and freeze in portions. fry the portions for bubble and squeak as it will go with most things.
