ds1 is 3.6 and has thankfully lost his allergy to egg but can now not have wheat! Still intollerant to dairy aswell. Im struggling to get him lunches that he likes. Really not interested in wheat free bread, despite trying every one and not telling him its different. Cant blame him as i think they are gross. He wont eat soup either! So when he goes to preschool i need things he can eat with his hands (not knife and fork type things as he wont keep still long enough apparantly)

cant find any wraps/tortillas without wheat, even the corn ones. He has vege sticks, ham, raisins, rice cakes etc but need something filling to replace a sandwich. Anyone help?

Hi there-
*Egg tortilla/piperade thing (a bit like an omelette) with whatever additions your son likes, eg ham, cooked potato cubes, sweetcorn, peppers - can be cut into triangles pizza-style - really yummy cold! (My 9 yr old daughter stills has these.)
*Beans are full of slow-release carbs and some protein. Chick peas are usually acceptable taste-wise and can be eaten with fingers, or mushed into pastes - use canned. Also butterbeans....
*Oat cakes are nutritious and filling and go with savoury as well as sweet toppings. If it is a gluten intolerance then these may not be suitable as oats still contain gluten.
*How about making a scone-type mini pizza using wheat-free flour?
*If you are into baking, you can make almost anything with wheatfree flour - I like Dove's farm (makes lovely choc brownies, using cocoa and dairy free spread...)
*The wheat free pastas are not bad tasting. You could use some of the bigger shapes as finger food - this would provide energy in form of carbs....
Run out of ideas!!!

Hi there i am wheatfree used to be dairyfree as well but that seems to be okish these days.

I have found bread... and it actual tastes like proper bread. I promise. It oculd make him very happy its from tesco and called genius you need to slice it yourself but in the wheatfree section. Brown is better than white tbh but even the white tastes good and the toast is amazing. It also doesnt go mouldy the second it comes into contact with air and not vaccuum packed.

Lunches you can make your own wraps and fill like a sandwich with the wheatfree flour i use rice it works best.

Spanish ommelette is good for lunches/ teas as well.

If your short on time wheatfree english muffins toasted with pizza toppings on are good- as is jam!

They do make lactose free cheese, could this be an option? sadly it wasnt for me

Hope this helps

This genius bread would definitely make sandwiches possible. it is quite new but sells it most stores i think. it is in a clear normal bread packet with green writing i think.

mad4myboys · 05/01/2010 19:17

hi yes we have genius bread! Havent managed to find the brown one yet. Im finding, if its fresh its ok but i generally slice it up then put it in the freezer and get out a slice at a time otherwise it gets wasted but it defrosts to become too hard!

How do i make my own wraps?

He eats goats cheese and had goats milk. He has never eaten any type of pizza! Even when i have made it on french stick (before wheat was a problem) tortillas may be an option, will make him omlette at w/e and see what he thinks

Have you tried using pancakes as wraps ? Or spring roll wrappers ?

Have you tried gf pitta bread ? I like then, and don't think they taste any different to 'normal'

My DS likes sushi - in his case, just sushi rice round cucumber or avocado, but you can put anything in the middle. Sounds complicated to make at first look, but actually really easy once you've done a couple of rolls

mad4myboys · 05/01/2010 20:32

im just doing online shop and cant find those rice flour wrap things, which is annoying. I dont think sushi rice with a middle would stay in tact until lunch time..their lunch bags kind of get all bundled on top of each other!

I put sushi rolls in a little tupperware box (the lock and lock one) and they survive being toted around with no problems. I'm the gluten free one, so often make them to take with me

mad4myboys · 05/01/2010 20:41

do they stay stuck together? Not sure what id put in them....

Yes, the rice is very sticky, and the seaweed bit (it really doesn't taste of seaweed btw) holds it all in. They don't have to have anything in the middle if you don't want - DS sometimes likes them just like that. I have had tuna mayo or chicken in mine sometimes, but you can put carrot, pepper, or cucumber in too

mad4myboys · 05/01/2010 20:58

is the seaweed stuff in the rice already?

No, you put a sheet of it on some clingfilm, then splodge the cooked rice on, then roll it up.

Theres instructions here

Dh has been coeliac all his life and doesn't know there is anything wrong with gf bread!

Would your ds eat gf crackers? Trufree and other brands do them and they stay fresh for ages in an airtight box. Would go well with the ham and other bits that you mention he likes.

I would advise (if you have time/can face it) try lots of different supermarkets and health food shops as the range they stock varies massively. (and also seems to change quite rapidly, e.g. they might sell something you like for a month or two, never to be seen again!)

GF pasta isn't too bad (imo). Would he eat a cold pasta salad?

I have a bento box this one which is great for alternatives to sandwiches for lunch. I do a Japanese one with sushi rice in one compartment, omelette sashimi (tamago) in another, edamame beans in another. DS loves them.

I also do:

  • meatballs in tomato sauce
  • chicken gougons with different barbeque dips
  • Crudite with different dips
  • mini fish cakes or corn cakes
  • pasta salad with rice noodles and sauteed slivers of beef
  • falafel served with a tabbouleh made with quinoa instead of bulgar wheat
-risotto made with pearled spelt -pasta salad made with buckwheat noodles -tuna sweetcorn salad with white beans

Rice paper rolls (spring roll paper) are really easy to make and stay together well because the rice paper becomes sticky, (you don't need to cook them). I usually make them with roast chicken strips and any type of salad really. To bulk them out I use a hand full of rice noodles. You just make them up like a wrap.
