Making your own marmalade this year?

Can you please nudge me when Seville oranges are in the shops? I know you can make marmalade with any oranges, but I like to use the proper ones and for the last 2 years I seem to have missed the very short Seville orange season (or perhaps my local supermarket does not stock them). Anyway, I would appreciate a shout if you see them for sale!

Mandarin Orange Marmalade
1lb/450g mandarins
1 lemon
1.5lb/675g jam sugar with added pectin
? Wash the mandarins well, then halve and squeeze them.
? Using an ordinary metal spoon, scrape the bits of membrane out of the mandarin halves and put in a pan with any pips and 10 floz/280ml water. Bring to the boil.
? Simmer for half an hour, topping up the water if it looks like it might burn.
? Flatten the skins out and put them in a pan with a pint of water. Bring to the boil, then put a lid on them and simmer until very tender, about 2 hours. (If you have a pressure cooker, 10 minutes at high will do the trick.)
? Drain the skins, reserving the liquid, and cut them into strips.
? Sieve the pip and membrane liquid, pushing through as much of the liquid as possible.
? Put both the pip and skin liquid in a large saucepan or jam pan and warm gently, then add the sugar and stir until it is completely dissolved.
? Add the chopped skins, the reserved mandarin juice and the juice of the lemon. Bring up to the boil, then boil until setting point is reached.
? Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes, then give it a good stir with a clean ladle and pot in hot, scrupulously clean jars.

Mine has not set.

What can I use to make it set, please. I don't have any Certo and cannot get to the shops.
It tastes really lovely but is very runny.

Re-boil, and add the juice (and pips) of a lemon I should think.(?)

GentleOtter · 06/01/2010 13:57

Thank you

We kept all the pips to grow trees so I'll boil everything up for a while.

lol at the trees!!! Do you know how long it takes for them to flower? and they're not frost hardy (looks out of window at snow)

We live just on the treeline on the side of a mountain but dd had an idea that we needed mandarin orange trees....next week. You know how impatient they get.

Well, I made lemon and lime marmalade the other day. It is a rather dull tawny colour, not at all as interesting looking as dh's shop bought bright green lemon and lime marmalade but since that has weird colourings in it derived from copper something-or-another I guess that is no bad thing.

I bought Sevilles in the wholesale market in Brum today at 50p/lb for a 40lb box (split it with my mother and three friends) then saw them in Waitrose for £1/lb later on. Felt very pleased!
