Away rom any other veg, which makes them sprout. In a shed?

Ally68 · 03/01/2010 18:23

Is it best to store them in trays, sacks (paper or hesian), etc ?

from googling:

You can store potatoes in paper sacks but leave the neck slightly open to allow excess moisture to escape. For this reason, do not use plastic bags under any circumstances. The best container is a Hessian sack.

Seona1973 · 03/01/2010 18:36

you should also apparently keep them away from onions

Thanks- good to know. Is in the shed better than indoors?

They certainly want to be somewhere cool. Our garage has the utility room (and boiler) just off it, and an insulated garage door; it is too warm. It needs to be somewhere dark, dry and cold, but frost-free!

They MUST be frost-free and in the dark.

Yes, they need to breathe, so paper sacks or hessian are best.

If they go green, it is toxic and you must not eat them.

Someone gave me a piotato hopper for a Christmas present and I love it. It keeps them cool and in the dark but accessible.

meltedmarsbars · 04/01/2010 12:03

What's it like?

I just keep it in my pantry

Ally68 · 04/01/2010 18:29

I'd love to have a proper pantry!
Thanks for all the advice.
They are going in the garage, in a couple of large hessian sacks.

But make sure they are totally in the dark or they will go green!
