New oven: gas or electric??

our oven is ancient and needs replacing.
dh keeps going on about how he wants a gas oven, everybody I know says electric is much better.
anyone know if there are obvious advantages/disadvantages to either?

I have gas hob and electric fan built in thing - love it.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 29/12/2009 22:42

It is my first oven still though so have no real experience of anything else. Have used an electric hob at a friends and didn't like it at all.

i HATE my electric oven, far prefer cooking with gas.

from an eco stand-point i guess electric is better....

whoever cooks the most gets to choose though!

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 29/12/2009 22:43

I love an electric main oven and a gas hob.

Kaloki · 29/12/2009 23:06

I also hate my electric oven. Everything seems to take twice as long to cook. Miss my parents gas oven!

We have a gas hob which I would not change to electric in a million years, but the oven is on its own.
has anyone got any experience of cleaning a gas oven? I've not seen one in use, is there a naked flame that can be put out if the food goes over?

Definitely electric oven. Gas ovens are less accurate and more variable in temperature in different parts of the oven. A good fan oven is the same temperature at the top and bottom for more even cooking.

LowLevelBahHumbug · 30/12/2009 12:46

PS I have had both and would choose electric every time. And yes, there is a flame at the back of a gas oven that can go out, eg if a draught gets in when you open it.

Electric.

I also have gas hob and electric oven (fan).

You can set an electric oven to start cooking when you are out so that dinner is ready on your return.

You can't do that with gas.

minervaitalica · 30/12/2009 15:37

Gas oven probably gets hotter, but it's far less accurate than an electric one ad far harder to use for things like baking where temp matters a lot. If you just do roasts it matters less I suppose - but having the choice I would never choose a gas oven (deffo gas hob).

Georgimama · 30/12/2009 15:38

An electric oven with a gas hob is generally considered best.

Georgimama · 30/12/2009 15:40

But the electric oven definitely needs a fan, rather than just being a straightforward leccy. I don't have gas here, so completely electric, and earlier this year the element went on the main fan oven, and until we got it replaced I was reduced to using the top oven (non fan). It was a nightmare. I'm sure I could have cooked stuff quicker by waving it over the open fire in the living room.

NumptyMum · 30/12/2009 15:40

Gas hob is useful in electricity cuts!!

Clary · 30/12/2009 15:42

electric oven much better for baking (more even temp etc). yy also fan oven vg. I have a gas oven and hate it as only one shelf gets really hot.

Gas hob tho every time.

So if I couldn't split it then I woudl go for gas overall not leccy overall IYSWIM.

Gas grill is good actually but a blowtorch can give the creme brulee effect for the few times a year you use it.

Almost an MN consensus here!

Ivykaty44 · 30/12/2009 15:44

I would go with gas, have gas myslef and all the chefs I know cook in kitchens with gas - not electric.

SomeGuy · 30/12/2009 17:21

gas hob, electric oven. If you have to have gas + gas or electric + electric, go for gas in both, electric hobs are just wrong.

NumptyMum · 30/12/2009 18:06

I have to say that we actually have an electric hob from Ikea and I find it fine to use - we have one with 2 halogen rings that heat up quickly. Having spent years in rented accommodation I find you adapt to whatever you cook with in the end, whether gas or electricity. Also for us, in a very small kitchen, the fact that the electric hob is flat means that I can put things on it when not in use as a hob (ie the washing up... obviously not on the warm/hot rings). It took me a few days to get used to the speed of a fan oven! But if you have the choice, a gas hob really WILL be useful in electricity cuts when the heating might go off and you can't boil the kettle - at least with a gas hob you can still brew a cuppa or make a hot water bottle...

thank you for your input!!
Finally discussed this with dh in depth and decided that the gas flame that can go out is a problem (we do a lot of slow roast that we just leave to cook for hours and go shopping in the meantime) so we finally bought a built-in electric oven with two ovens both with fans ... from Boots (of all places, i didn't even know they do ovens?!)
It's coming monday, can't wait!
