preparing roasties then freezing and cooking

Me again with yet another "help" quesion. On the thread about roasties someone mentioned they prepare their roasties, parboil them then freeze them and i think they said when the time comes they just bung them in the oven frozen. Does anyone know if you need to partially roast them or cover them in fat or would you just parboil and freeze? And would it really be ok to chuck them in frozen, i have visions of xmas day people breaking their teeth on frozen bits of potato!!!

it's only the same as cooking oven chips so as long as they've been given enough time with the turkey to roast, they won't chip anyone's teeth!

NotanOtter · 22/12/2009 21:50

i intend to put them in smoking fat on the day...just unsure whether to defrost or do from frozen

NotanOtter · 22/12/2009 22:22

anyone advise??

fanjolina · 22/12/2009 23:36

I am going to try from frozen. Can't be fannied with trying to defrost them. Won't be any room in the fridge, and if I leave them on the countertop the cats will probably lick them.

NotanOtter · 23/12/2009 13:47

ok i think i will too - in a hot oven they should be fine

FolornHope · 23/12/2009 13:48

I don't get this. It's hardly difficult to cook a batch of roasties on the day (especially if dp peels them!). The only difficulty I find is fitting them all in the oven and pre-cooking won't solve that problem.

fanjolina · 23/12/2009 20:05

actually pre-cooking has helped with that cos I know that all of mine fit on two trays. so no need to worry on day.

With 3 DC - one still a breastfeeding baby, I am doing everything I can in advance so freezing will take the stress out.

NotanOtter · 23/12/2009 21:32

janeite! I have done four large trays of roasties and 10kg of mash - along with the rest of the meal plus actual child care on the day 'yes' it actually is too much for me

maybe i am a slacker?

fanjolina · 23/12/2009 21:36

NotAnOtter - are you feeding the 5000?

NotanOtter · 23/12/2009 21:48

no - i like to stay away from the kitchen for at least 3 days after christmas and this way i can just about do it!

Crazycatlady · 23/12/2009 22:04

10kg of mash? Seriously?

NotanOtter · 23/12/2009 22:20

we love carbs in our house!

CaptainNancy · 23/12/2009 22:25

Janeite- you're back?
How was it?????

JaneiteQuiteRight · 24/12/2009 11:34

Flippin 'eck Otter! HOW many are you feeding? Not a slacker, no - I forgive you!

Captain N - it was fab: snowy and cold and beautiful. Just lovely.

CaptainNancy · 24/12/2009 12:05

Actually, it's looking pretty snowy and cold and almost if you squint beautiful here... did you see it last night coming down?
DD was like this ===>

JaneiteQuiteRight · 24/12/2009 13:53

True - it was a lovely surprise to get back to it. However, the rooftops of Prague are deffo prettier than the roof-tops of Brum!
