what is the white set filling? Is it a custard? What is it called? It is very pale so am hoping it is egg free.

Creme patissiere. It's a sweetened vanilla custard iirc.

SleighBelleDameSansMerci · 20/12/2009 18:12

It's creme anglaise and, ironically, I don't think you can buy it here... Not sure if it's egg free or not.

SleighBelleDameSansMerci · 20/12/2009 18:12

Actually, now I've said that I think it's creme patisserie.

Grandhighpoohba · 20/12/2009 18:12

I think its creme patesse (sp?) a french custard with eggs in it. but I could be wrong.

DarrellRivers · 20/12/2009 18:13

Isn't creme anglaise custard?

suiledonne · 20/12/2009 18:16

Great - such quick replies. I am thinking creme patisserie too but it is always white rather than custard coloured.

DD1 is allergic to eggs so was hoping it might be suitable.

It is creme patissiere, which is a thick custard. I've made it before but have never seen it on sale - even in Waitrose. A recipe.

SleighBelleDameSansMerci · 20/12/2009 18:16

Yes, I think it is. I think the stuff in the tarts in creme patisserie.

DarrellRivers · 20/12/2009 18:17

stop talking about these things
I'm getting hungry

Lilymaid · 20/12/2009 18:17

Just seen about the allergy, so suggest making a thick sauce using cornflour (or custard powder, milk, vanilla essence instead!

suiledonne · 20/12/2009 18:19

What the hell. DD1 is only 3 she won't care. Strawberry tarts with creme patissiere for me and DH, a cookie for dd1

Yes, would suggest using a cornflour-based custard - make sure it's sweetened or it will be grim!!

Lilymaid · 20/12/2009 18:21

Yes, "sugar to taste" or will be like wallpaper paste.

lilylu22 · 24/12/2009 17:09

I've done one of these tarts before and just used powdered custard, and i didn't notice the difference between this and the real thing! Just an idea incase you're feeling lazy x
