Need translation of an American recipe

DD was given (for Christmas last year )a kit to make a cookie Christmas tree. 10 star shaped cutters, and a recipe booklet.

The gingerbread recipe requires shortening and unsulphured molasses. What are they then?

And how much is a cup in grams or ounces?

OR

Do you have a suitable alternative gingerbread recipe?

Thanks.

Ah yes - there's no fat in the recipe otherwise. Will use Stork, unless someone tells me something else would be better.

I have no molasses. Have never even looked for molasses. Can I use golden syrup? Or do I need black treacle?

A cup depends what it is on how heavy it is.

I'd use baking margarine for shortening and molasses is molasses afaik.

Might be simpler to find another recipe. No point substituting it all out.

Use White Flora for the shortening. Treacle is probably as close to molasses as I can think.

Shortening is fat, I always use butter but you could use vegetable shortening, trex or similar.

Molassess, I always use black treacle for this.

Thanks Riven. Alternative recipe looks like it may well be the way to go.

Oh - took a while to post that, and missed lots more help.

Thank you all. Now to off to find the enthusiasm to do the actual baking.
