Go on, own up, your cheapest Christmas dinner ever. And were you proud or resigned to it?

Basically one year in about October I saw a turkey in a tray thing at Morrisons in the reduced section, about to go off. It cost £1.29.

At the time I pictured using it for dinner one night, so I popped it in the freezer for future use.

I knew it was there, and in the end I got as far as the 23rd Dec and thought 'well, it is a shame to waste it', so we had it for Xmas dinner.

Along with roast potatoes, brussels sprouts and carrots, with Bisto best gravy and stuffing, it was very nice and to be honest virtually indistinguishable from the usual one.

And I have to say it was very easy to make. Now I find myself wondering why I bother to do more?

Stir-fry and proud. Though I don't think that's really what you meant..

cloudspotter · 15/12/2009 17:19

Well, it still counts in my book! Was it home made or take away?

Home made and very tasty In fact I may do it again this year

30andLurking · 15/12/2009 17:37

Last year, ham and baguettes, not even made up in sandwiches, in a layby on a French motorway.

Made up for it when we got to the Alps though...

cornsilklikeshumous · 15/12/2009 17:37

cheapest is eating at my mum's house
Haven't been invited yet this year though

Absolutely cornsilk, good point.

30andlurking, I think the cheapness of the ham baguette is somehow offset by the Alps holiday!

ha ha, merrycompo, when kids are involved, spag bol or even fish fingers and chips is always a more palatable option.

we gave the DS's pizza a few years back - was before they were big into their roasts (they love them now and would hate me forever if they didn't get one) - they loved it.

Think we had quail that year - that I'd got really cheap from the butcher

when we were backpacking we got one of those ready made hot roast chickens and had it in wraps with home made slaw. yum! one of the best, actually.. more time for cuddles and going for walks!
