Buffet snacks (with an E.European twist)

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me out with buffet food suggestions. I'm going to a party, of the 'everyone bring something' variety.

They can be sweet or savoury, (I'll probably do some of each). Need to be vegetarian, and light (there will be dancing, so don't want anything too solid).

Also (to complicate things further) Its an Eastern European dancing group, so if you know of any snacks that are E.European/Greek/Turkish, that would be brilliant.

Sorry there are so many demands, but I know there are some people out there who are brilliant at this kind of thing, and any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Your post was so polite I had to reply! What about something with feta cheese for the Greek element? Perhaps a tortilla wrap cut into small circles topped with olive paste (is that tapenade or have I just made that up?) some feta cheese and an olive? Or use sundried tomato paste if you dont like olives. Or use crackers they might be more robust than the tortilla wrap, i didn't really think that through.

Something with turkish delight as the 'sweet' element? Might be bit obvious though so everyone might do that.

My dh is czech - does that count as eastern?
Unfortunately they don't really do sweet - mostly just meats, and certainly not vege!

He would say:

salami, esp Hungarian (the best, apparently), served sliced with slices of gerkin in sweet vinegar.

Caviar & blinis and soured cream.

Ham

Parky (esp smoked) - these are like frankfurters but in all sorts of flavours and sizes.

Dill pickled fish.

So basically thats no help at all - sorry!

Turkish/greek - what about little boreki/tiropita - those tiny triangular parcels filled with feta? They are not hard to make with pre-bought filo pastry.

You can do them with spinach too in which case they are spanikapita (not sure about spelling!).

Stuffed vine leaves?

Feta and olives on sticks?

Turkish delight

Houmous and flatbreads.

Or for a more unusual dip, as lots of people might do houmous, what about babaganoush/melanzasalata (again sorry - not sure about spelling!) - which is an aubergine dip. You can make from scratch or buy pre-made he he.

Thank you everyone, some great ideas, they all sound really appetizing. Will definitely go with some kind of feta/olive thing (mainly because I love olives!) Aubergine dip sounds lovely too, I may have a go at that (or search the delis in town). And I know what things to ask for now I have the names.

Many thanks for all your suggestions, you have inspired me!

a few more for you to add:

russian salad (chopped veg with mayo or greek yoghurt to make it lighter)

white cheese with a little oil/paprika sprinkled on top

dips & crudites

blini with egg mayo/chives or even devilled eggs (where you mix the yolk with stuff and put it back in)

some really good rye bread

for sweets you could do:

fruit plate with a chocolate dip

baklava

mini lemon mousse

vodka jello shots!

thinly sliced orange salad with chopped nuts on top

Halloumi wrapped in bacon is lovely and very easy to do!

KurriKurri · 14/12/2009 22:07

They all sound delicious, many thanks - now I just have to choose!!!

For dessert: yoghurt with honey.
